To all my fellow veterans - Happy Veterans days, enjoy any of the specials.
To all non-veterans , especially family members of veterans - thank you for your support, without which we would not have been able to serve.

Hard to believe, but my dad's mom, born 1889, knew many civil war veteran's during her lifetime. Some of my my earliest memories are that she was the oldest person I knew, and 30 years later she was still the oldest person I ever knew. In her 90s, she had lost a lot of short term memory, but I recall during her visits with us, dad would sit with her and ask questions about long ago times, and as he tuned her memory up, she would report all kinds of things that happened in her lifetime with remarkable clarity. She drove a horse and buggy to teach in a one room schoolhouse for many years. She was my mother's mom's elementary school teacher in Wellsburg WV. She would feed the men traveling the country looking for work during the depression times, but they were to remain on her porch. One came into the house, and she chased him out with a .45 revolver. This looks a bit like an Inzane rally, except for the nice clothes.

Thank you, veterans. My gratitude to all who have loved this country enough to give a part of their lives in her support. We are what we are largely because of the sacrifice of our veterans.
I am a veteran but I received more than I gave and no one ever tried to kill me.

I have some good pics during service. My favorite is in fatigues with my feet on my desk with a WWII helmet on. But this is the only one already on line somewhere. Back when I still had some hair.

I echo the gratitude of the others posting here. USAF, 8Jan57-8Jan63. Today I joked with a couple guys at the gym, told them for a minute I thought I was back in boot camp. I got a free haircut and free meal. Big difference though, still had hair left when done and the person doing the cutting was a lot cuter & smelled a heck of lot better as well. Some time ago I got rid of any old uniforms I had, I found they all had shrunk either hanging in the closet or folded up in the dresser.

I have a few good old pics of my dad in the Korean War early 1950s. One is him cross country skiing on huge old wooden skis and another is my favorite him and others sitting outside in the open in winter on make-shift poddys sitting side by side by side doing their personal duty....
I cannot even imagine him being a paratrooper in the army jumping out of airplanes behind enemy lines being shot at as coming down to the ground. He never talked about it much but said over half of his troop never made it back. Only other thing he mentioned was being frostbite cold and guns freezing up so cold would not shoot and starving.

Dad was was a Marine aviator in WW II stationed in Hawaii. Never talked much about it but was a fighter pilot and his love for aircraft had to change a little. He was very much into flying model aircraft later in life and it wore off on me. Anyway he was also a photo buff and had a 16mm Bolex movie camera which I think was used to take some movies after the war while he was still stationed in Hawaii. Just in case you are interested, some clips he (well someone shot some film of him and a friend after the war). Dad is the man on the right in the first part of the video. https://www.dropbox.com/s/d2u6s1vra6530pm/Dad%20in%20Hawaii%20Take%203.mov?dl=0Edited to correct sentence structure.

My old man passed away in July just short of his 97th birthday. He joined the Navy in 1943 and retired in 1977. Before he passed, he gave me a lot of pictures he had taken in the Philippines. He was in Acorn 45. In the war in the Pacific, there were Oak units and Acorn units. The Oak units would establish a base in newly captured or recaptured territory and the Acorn units would set up the airfield. My dad's unit set up the airfield in Sangley Point in the Philippines. Here's a few pics: My dad and his buddies just out of boot camp in 1944 (he's the second one from the end on the left) Some friends on break Out on the town with his buddies: Checking out some visitors that had recently dropped in in Palawan A PBM between bombing runs Happy veteran's day pop. We miss you. -RP
