I stopped by the shop that used to be the local Honda dealer. Now it’s a “Motorsports” place. There’s one salesman that was there 20 years ago when I was looking for a Valkyrie. He couldn’t find what I wanted but I ended up finding it on my own. We’ve been shooting the breeze about motorcycles for the last 20 years.

So today. I was looking at the new Rebel. It’s kinda cool. All they had was a 500cc. There is also an 1100cc model. I said I was happy it was a chain. The salesman said he wished it was shaft. When I said I thought chain drive was less work he disagreed. So I explained that when I take the rear wheel off I remove everything up to the Ujoint. He said “Ya, we do none of that. Just pull the axle and pop the wheel off and back on.”

This is why I do my own rear wheel R/R!!!

Yep, same with my dealer. The only final drive issues I’ve ever had was caused by the dealer leaving the final drive bolted on for a rear tire change.

Exactly. I keep saying, the best way to learn how to work on your Valkyrie is to take it to the Dealer. You spend the money then you have to fix what they did, or didn’t do.

The dealers around here have made it easy, most won't touch a bike over 10 years old now...

Here too but I think the exception is they sell tires and will still mount and balance them on Valkyrie’s

This happened up here quite a few years ago, the dealers won't take in any older bikes. Fortunately there are two ex Honda Dealer head mechanics within an hour of me I know who have set up shop at their homes. They're both well experienced in GL1500 and GL1800's, and are kept busy on a full time  basis working on these  as well as other bikes. I've used both of them for tire changes, and it's nice to know they're around if something major ever needs to be done on my bikes that I can't do. They both said they couldn't wait to get away from the dealer shops and the way "service" is carried out there now. They're old-school mechanics who like wrenching on the older bikes.

How many here would be willing to pay a dealer enough
to make it worth his time to do all this driveshaft cleaning
and greasing...?

"How much to install a new tire?"
"$42.00"
"Does that include disassembling and refurbishing the final drive?"
"Uh, let me go get the manager..."

I’d be happy if they just loosened the four bolts before torquing the axle and properly greased the splines. They don’t usually do that even

BTW. The dealer here charges WAY over 42 bucks to do a rear wheel. They ARE getting paid to do it right. I just don’t believe they will.

If the dealer charges for the work the book calls for (as some do) the list is long for what they are charging for and most likely not doing.

I guess we are lucky.  Our local Honda shop has a mechanic I've been taking my Honda's to for over 30 years.  He understands Valkyrie's and he teaches his younger mechanics.  I've not wanted to go to anyone else.  Even when we moved to Baltimore for 2 years I'd bring it down if I had an issue.  He will even mount a car tire.  He even takes hard electrical problems.  Shame more are not like him.

I agree that’s how it used to be and still should be

I have bought several Valks. When I hear the are dealer maintained , I lower the price offer. One of the earlier ones , it took two pry bars to get the rear end apart. The splines were shot , cushions junk and drier than a popcorn fart. . Dealer just installed a tire.

Exactly Jeff. I just did the carbs on a bike for guy who had bought the bike a few years prior. He had the carbs done at the dealer. He called me when they started leaking profusely. I did my complete tear down with new bigger jets and new float needles. When he picked it up he took it for a ride around the block. Told me "it never has run this well.'
