My 85 year old Aunt Gloria didn't.  She used to drive from Bradenon, FL to Panama City to visit her daughter and used the HOV lanes whenever she could.
She used to dress up a mannequin to resemble a man (with a baseball cap, a moustache, hairpiece, and eyeglasses) so that it would resemble that she had someone traveling with her.
She was a fiesty pistol until we lost her a year ago at 96.


Oh yeah...she carried a kitchen knife in her purse, too.

As I recall, there's an episode of Larry David's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" where he picks up a hooker to ride in the passenger seat for this very reason.

There's this old Coupe De Ville Cadillac down the street from me with two mannequins dressed up like two old ladies going to church in the back seat, always parked on the street.

It's kind of creepy looking.  If I was hitchhiking, I would not get in with them.

I drove through Memphis last month.  People by themselves were using the HOV as a passing lane. I guess it just wasn't enforced.
