Tis The Season...

Here we are… again... smack in the middle of the season, etc. This time, however, everything is different. For the last couple of decades or a bit more our girl and her confused rider have been out and about this time of year soaking up all the adventure we could stumble across. Not this time...

We found ourselves at 'home', and I must admit it has been a novel but wonderful experience! No unplanned stopovers this year in some previously unknown motel somewhere along the southern tier of states on our perpetual coddiewomple.

It was not at all planned, I must add, but familiar circumstances did cause things to evolve this way... The usual suspects are the reason, of course... the random timings of unfavorable weather and the seemingly endless succession of doctors’ visits nowadays...

Those two continual coddiewomple adversaries have now combined with cancer and COVID to make the bunching-up of appointments extremely difficult, resulting in a very limited range opportunity available to us. Dang! What had been a mostly bi-annual migration to Montgomery has now turned into more of a monthly or bi-monthly trudge to that historic city... This new routine is getting old, too...

Anyway, with moisture seemingly lurking around every bend in the road this year and an all too short time interval until the next 'healthcare' visit, we'd more or less given up and simply returned home until things could settle out some... Who could have predicted that would turn out so well!

As usual, my daughter was hosting a big event at her house. My late landlady's baby brother & spouse, now the owners of our old house... and who are now my landlords, were hosting this Wanderer-Wanna-Be, so we all made the one-hundred-mile cage trek together to my daughter's house for the big deal.

There would be some strong emotional undertows for my daughter this time, so I was glad I was able to be there... to pinch-hit, so to speak. This would be my daughter's first Christmas without her mother. Plus, her mother, my ex/landlady, had always been an integral part of the festivity's preparation and execution... Periodic tears were unavoidable... still...

Our blended family of blood kin, in-laws, outlaws, and scofflaws were all there in force, so naturally there was also much spontaneous laughter and indiscriminate reminiscing... Present also was that warm loving feeling that permeated the entire gathering, and that was the best part of the whole deal! Yeah, this ordinarily reclusive rider was right in the thick of things, and he had an incredible time!!!

I don't anticipate the likelihood of being arrested for any of my conduct, but I did hug a couple dozen necks, tell a tall tale or ten, and thoroughly enjoy overeating and just being with such wonderful folks! So, now it's back to the grind...

Those festivities are behind us now, and we're on the road headed for Montgomery... yet again. I have another visit with my urologist to make there, then we'll return again in mid-January, also, because of a bad biopsy on some tissue removed from my right cheek by my dermatologist on a routine visit a week or so ago... It just never ends! I will likely be ‘home’ for the New Year’s celebration… then right back on the treadmill to Montgomery…

It appears, regrettably, that I may have been completely mistaken back in my misspent youth... Indications in recent years point to my not having been bullet-proof, indestructible, or incredibly brilliant after all... Nope, and having to pay for all of my indiscretions, boo-boos, and blunders now is proving to be more than a bit inconvenient!!!

What a great analogy, Seth cooldude

Keep on truckin' Bruce. Sounds like a great Christams was had... can't ever go wrong when time spent away from things we love to do is spent with family.  We're getting a bonus day with our daughter and granddaughters up here in Northern BC due to our return flight being delayed. At -40°C though , your bit of moisture there sounds pretty good right about now Smiley

Bruce,
It made me smile to hear that you were with family and having a good time during “the season”.  I expect that it helped to soften the empty spot that Tilley filled for several in attendance at those festivities.

In this, you are not alone!  It makes me think of that ditty about arriving at deaths door in great health or all used up, I am very sure that I will be saying, or maybe whispering, “wow! What an exciting ride this has been”!
Until then, the scars can lead to such wonderful tall tales!

Bruce, if it makes your heart happier, it’s been 75 days in a row with zero precipitation here.

When did you have Covid? or are you just referring to the upheaval it has caused in daily life?

Hey here brother, been a bit since our conversations on the Yupper Ride and FCR. I have embraced the vagabond lifestyle to a point and pulled my 18ft toyhauler to near Cedar Key, FL. The riding is great, and as always the Valk groups are super to join with and ride with. Shoot me a text at 6one6836eight1six6 as i am planning a Duval and Front street pilgramage in Jan or Feb and might drop by your area for a meal or a gab fest. Stay safe and by fate or design, see you soon.

Evan,

Thanks, and the same back at you! I'll definitely drink to many more good days! You're right, of course, the road will still be there when I'm finally ready... Heck, absence does make the heart grow fonder, so when I eventually do get back out there, who knows what all I might run across!!! Hope to see you out there somewhere, too...

Seth,

MSB is right on the money! That is a great analogy! Looking forward to being lubed up and roadworthy once again... Who knows, I might even feel an urge to wander to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison area again...

Mike,

I hear ya, my friend! I did have a huge time mingling with all the loved ones again... Hard to believe sometimes that I can actually stay away as much as I do... Glad you've had some quality time with your special folks, too... Hope to see all y'all next summer!

Jerry,

Thanks for your remarks! My daughter has a picture of my ex on one of the shelves by the fireplace... I often sit and stare at that pic and think of the times we shared, the things we did, and the love we shared. Yeah, I along with everyone miss her, but... that's the way life is...

You and I have much in common... Not the least of which is the likelihood we'll both arrive at the Pearly Gates in an all used up condition! Oh well, better to wear out than to rust out... Looking forward to the next time we can share some wind...

Eric,

I knew there were periodic episodes like that in your area... However, the last two times I've been through there, our girl and I got wet!!! Timing is everything, it's been said... obviously I haven't mastered that yet... Reckon I'm going to have to just keep going there until I can get it right!

When did you have Covid? or are you just referring to the upheaval it has caused in daily life?

Paul,

No, I've been most fortunate and not had that ailment myself! I know several who have, one who even died as a result. Getting the vaccine made sense to me, so I got one... I've now even had a booster. My choice: others may see things very differently... that's their choice.

Yes, I was referring to all of the upheaval, disruptions, and dislocations that virus has caused! This entire calamity has played havoc with healthcare providers with their scheduling of appointments, managing cancelations, and having to work around frequently changing government edicts... No small inconvenience to patients, either!!!

Tim,

Hey, great to hear from ya! Yeah, I enjoyed your update given to me at the FCR... Appears you just may be on the brink of a life-altering series of choices about future living arrangements! FWIW, I congratulate you on that choice, too... the one you're dabbling with right now will lead to your 'living' more than you ever dreamed!

I've made a note of your number, and I'll be adding it to my directory in a few minutes. In the meantime, if by Duval and Front streets you're referring to Key West... good luck! For those who've never been, it is a bucket-list worthy trip. For most of us who have been, we harbor no strong desires to return. Seriously interesting, but way expensive and every time I've been, it was crowded. Still, worth doing at least once.

As for us getting together while you're down this way... Who knows! I'd enjoy doing that, but I have no idea where I might be at any given time... I will text you and include my number... Never say never, of course, but saying yes is a little complicated for this geriatric juvenile too...

Sounds like an excellent time.  cooldude Most of my adult life Thanksgiving and Christmas have been busy, stressful, exhausting times. Hanging out with the family was the only thing that made it bearable.

Rob,

Funny in a way, but family events sort of remind me of riding... The longer I'm away from such things, the more I forget just how important and wonderful they can be... I received a 'booster shot' of family stuff lately, and I must say I'm amazed at just how thankful I am that things worked out the way they did! I hope your holidays have also been filled with all the things that make them extra special!!!
