Been gone two weeks and I needed a restock run. First stop after breakfast and a really Nice hug from my Favorite Waitress-wally wurld-WalMart to y'all. Met a fellow Navy Veteran and we bent each others ear fer a bit and I finished the restock and went to pay out. A lady and her son get behind me and as I'm talking with her yet Another Navy veteran gits behind the lady and we started when where what ship conversation. He was Korea and Nam and I was Nam. He goes to another line and as I'm gittin checked out this LADY comesa around me and with the $75.00 I put on my Murphy card the total IS a bit north of $121.00. I had my bank card out I'm not broke a bit over $2300.00 in my checking and this LADY pays my bill with her credit card! She does NOT remember Nam But she watched videos on You Tube and her take is-we/she need to do MORE for the VETERANS! I TRIED 3 times to NOT let her pay my bill BUT She was Having NONE of THAT! As I sit here posting this my eyes are watering again! Still STUNNED and Somewhat Choked up over this. GOD Bless AMERICA And This Fine LADY I interacted with today! RIDE SAFE.

I  have lots of ball caps I wear.  I especially like wearing the new one I got, shown below.  People some times ask if I served.  Some people thank me for my service.  Yesterday I was at a local shop to buy an orchid (for the wife).  I was wearing the hat.  At check out I was asked if I was a veteran and I said yes.  She then offered me a discount.  I told her thanks but.... I really don't need it.  She insisted.

On the way home I stoped at an ACE hardware store.  A young lad (maybe 14 - 15 ) asked me if he could help me find something.  He did (I assume his parents owned the store and he was just have a wonderful learning experience).  As I left the store, he thanked me for my service.

Today I was at Publix and the lady at check out and the young lady doing the bagging thanked me for my service (I was wearing the hat).

I am beginning to believe, at least here in rural South Carolina, we have a chance to keep this Republic.

Heck of a story Dennis, and thanks for sharing.   cooldude

I almost never remember to ask for any veterans or old age discounts (except for things like expensive appliances).

I just don't remember to ask.

I go to my auto parts store and the registers show my past history (and vet status) and the guys asks, are you still a vet?   We'll give you the discount.  Ummm OK.  Grin

I’ve heard of similar stories and it’s great to hear of the respect. One never knows the reasons why but all I can think is respect and honor of the sacrifices of our military. When it happens you can try to be nice and say no thank you but just roll with it if you don’t make any headway.

Lowes stores offer 10 percent discount for Veterans and nearly all restaurants give some discount off for meals for old age, might as well take advantage of both.

Was raised by an old Corpsman that ended up with the 1st Marines three times . On his last trip to Bethesda Navel Hospital I was told all about what he called Observing America,s best. He had served in WW2, Korea and Viet Nam where he was called Grandpa because he was in his 40s
Because of him I will always pay your bill, help you lift things that may be too heavy and most of all I will always say Thank You.
It was the way I was raised and what I was lucky enough to see when I was young.

I ride with a group that dose escorts for vets funerals. We have been in a restraint several times and found out when we started to pay for our meal that someone had already payed the bill for all of us. like was said there are good people out there.

I see appreciation everywhere I go for our service folk. I think we see TOO much negative on the media fronts thus our perspective gets a little skewed as to what reality is. Thank you to all that served and God Bless!

"Are you still a vet?"   uglystupid2

Strange coincidence...I was asked that same question by a young guy at checkout some time back. The gal behind me gave him a look that would kill, then flatly told him there's at least two things in our life that never change; your gender and your vet status. The kid gave her a dumb look and said "well...I was just asking." She answered with "well...your cheese has slipped off the cracker a bit it seems." It was obvious he had no clue what she was saying, I just smiled and thanked him then left. Smiley

Well yeah, when the guy asked me that at Advance Auto Parts (are you still a vet), he clearly was just trying to ask if I wanted the vet's discount indicated on my past transactions on his cash register.  He didn't mean an insult, and was just trying to be helpful.

Perhaps they're not supposed to give it unless you ask, so he invited me to ask.  That's how I took it.

I try to pass my days without feeling mini-aggressions about small stuff, and simple ignorance.

It's the big stuff that gets me wound up.

If he asked me when I stopped beating my wife I would have laughed (that's an old one).    Grin

My wife and I used to regularly play card games.  I beat her frequently.  We don't play nearly as often these days but I never stopped beating my wife.
