I bought a 2000 Honda Valkyrie Interstate a few months ago and it had 5,854 original miles on it. The back story (told to me) is, when purchased new in 2000....the original owner had some items of oem chrome added to the bike from the dealer. Cool stuff. The 2nd owner (sometime in 2001) only rode it 30-40 miles and then came upon bad health (eventually passing) So the bike was stored in a garage for 20 years until it came up for sale and I got it in 2021. After all the work I've done to it, it will be an almost new I/S back on the road in the spring of 2022.

This bike has "foam type" handle grips. They really resemble a pool noodle but not as thick. It's hard for me to believe someone would've added this to the bike so the mystery to me is.....are they stock?

I also own a 99 I/S and my dad ownes 3 other Valks but all of them are 99's. Most of them have the same rigid/smooth rubber type grip. I'm positive they are stock.

Did Honda change the handle grips in 2000?

No change in grips on any models (likely multiple Honda models too).  Changing them out is no big deal, OE or aftermarket.  BUT, removing the throttle side, you want to be very careful and not damage the white plastic throttle sleeve under the grip (which glides on the handlebar).  If you booger that up, you have to order a whole grip assembly, and cannot get just a new sleeve.

I always used an icepick and can of solvent (Gumout carburetor cleaner) with the skinny nozzle; slip the pick in gently, sister the skinny nozzle beside it and squirt.  Couple times and off.  Others used compressed air.

You might have Grip Puppy on your bike.

Easiest way to remove grips you aren't going to use anymore is to carefully cut them off. I been using the same pair of Kuryakyn ISO for 12 yrs./two bikes. The larger diameter is more comfortable to my grip and they have palm rest/cruise option also.

My thought too.

I liked them on a narrow stock grip.

Thanks for all the comments & tips on removing them. I kinda thought they were aftermarket but needed to know for sure.

As far as why the owner put those grips on there, people have different ideas about comfort; in seats, bar risers, foot position, backrests, shields and grips.  (though sometimes it's just looks)

There have been people who reported trouble with their hands going to sleep on the Valk, and it was both sides, but more often just the throttle side (and I think it is the throttle sleeve under the grip, that has to be loose enough to freely turn on the handlebar, vibrating at sustained higher RPMs).  I've had that happen a few times, only on the throttle side.

The pool noodle foamers might have been his solution to that problem (or not).

I run Kuryakyn Iso Grips (with a right throttle boss) and so do a lot of guys, but many like the OE grips best.

Personally, I have preferred the "old school" grips.....that fill your hands.  They are not flat, but have a "curvature" to them.

But I don't believe they will fit a Valk.  They generally only fit a 7/8 bar.  But I LIKE them!!

How big of bar does a Valk have?

One inch bars.

The grips you showed (on amazon) are exactly what came on my 1970 BSA Lightning. Often called Coke bottle grips.
