Woman Rescued After Driving onto Frozen River, Taking Selfie

Witnesses say she was speeding along for as many as 18 miles before ice cracked
www.newser.com/stor...s-to-be-rescued.html

A woman drove onto a frozen river in Canada on Sunday, a move that perhaps predictably ended up with a rescue. Witnesses say the woman sped onto the frozen Rideau River near Ottawa, Ontario, and her vehicle cracked the ice. She climbed out and was seen taking smiling selfies atop the car, the National Post reports. Meanwhile, rescuers jumped into action, calling 911 and gathering ropes and other supplies. Two men tied a rope to a kayak, threw it to her from ice that had not yet cracked, and pulled her out of the river after she climbed on. The vehicle sunk and remains in the river, and the woman has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. She was not hurt.

She is believed to have driven a "considerable distance" on the ice before the incident, possibly more than 18 miles, the Ottawa Citizen reports. She was believed to be traveling nearly 40mph at times. "My kids were playing hockey on our outdoor rink, and it’s not something you’d expect to see, but suddenly a car just went racing by," says one local. "At first, my wife and I were in shock, and then we were concerned for the kids … our own kids and the other kids along the river. There’s a lot of rinks along the river."

My local news station reported this early this morning. I am interested to see how this works out with her car insurance claim.
I've seen a show called Ice Truckers or something close to that, I guess she has ambitions.........

I have to wonder about frozen rivers. Once we went up to the
family homeplace on my mother's side in West Virginia in the
middle of the winter (we don't usually go up there in the winter).
It was like -12 or something, the Greenbrier River was frozen
all the way across, real thick too. But they tell me to leave
my faucet dripping on cold nights to keep the pipes from
freezing?

pretty sure her insurance company will not cover the vehicle.  Driving on frozen lakes around us is not my cup of tea would prefer to walk or now take the ATV needing only 6 inches of ice vs. 12 inches for a vehicle.  I cringe everytime I see a truck on the ice coming up to where I am ice fishing and see the water go up/down in my hole and the POP/CRACK/BANG sound as well of ice cracking.

Alcohol, drugs legal or not?

I have no idea but, she supposedly drove about 18 miles on the iced up river.   If that isn't a sobering experience/trip, I don't know what is.  Wink

Edited:  Just got this from a Canadian acquaintance: I have no idea whether or not it's true.

Rideau revenge breakup, lol.

Acting out, manic, attention seeking, volatile, destructive, narcissistic.
He's unhappy that the car is wrecked, but relieved she's now in custody, in a safe place, sedated, mellowed.

' I'm just glad no one was hurt, we broke up weeks ago, I didn't know she had keys to my car ! '
Later, ' The Crown recommends a fine of five thousand dollars and an order of repayment to the car's owner. '

From the 1697 play, The Mourning Bride, by William Congreve: ' Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned '

Just my two cents worth…..not only should she be fined heavily, she should have to pay for the car, she should also have to pay dearly for the damage to the river the oil and gas she turned loose on the river has and is going to cause.
