I’m so happy about my good fortune I just had to share.

I had security duty at church so It’s a nice night. A little cool but we’re in for a cold snap and this may be my last ride of the week. Now a cold snap for us is low 20s overnight and a high of 40 ish.

Anyway I always look the bike over before I push it out and what do I find. A small nail head stuck in the front tire dead center of tread. Now I’m rather disappointed because it’s a fairly new Cobra Chrome. Man!

So I’m thinking that nail head is worn down a lot so it’s been there at least the last ride or two and the tire isn't low. So I decide to ride to church anyway. I just got home and found the nail again. Grabbed an ice pick to dig the nail out with. And to my delight it came out sideways meaning it didn’t even get close to penetrating the belt. It was very superficial.

Just to be double sure I got a glass of water and filled the little hole and waited. No bubbles!!

That tire will live another day  cooldude

Straight in holes in the front tire are pretty rare.  Physics and all.

The plug in my rear car tire is going on 3.6 years.  No leaky.

Its nice to get lucky every once in awhile isn't it.  That is if getting a nail in a tire is lucky in any way.

Jess,

That's certainly consistent with my own experience. In my entire more than half a century riding career, I've had exactly one front tire boo-boo... way too many rear tire occurrences to count, though! I made the roundtrip to Alaska and back last time on a plugged rear MC tire... never even had to add any air the whole way...

are you still planning on keeping that tire for another 5+ years of useful life?  Just curious since a blowout in the front tire seems more dangerous than a rear tire, or so I am told luckily never had either.

It won’t last 5 years but I do plan on riding it until it wears out. The damage is not structural. Like I said very superficial. In a few months the damage will be worn off and the tire will still be good for hundreds of miles

Jess and Bruce,

Don't have the miles/experience of you guys but my only flat was a rear and running about 55 on a two lane country road. It went down what I consider quick, a 100-150 yards. I managed to get off of the road to a safe spot but it ranks in my top 10 least favorite events while riding. Temporarily plugged it, later, pulled it off and had a local truck tire guy repaired it. It was a car tire and took me a few years to wear it out but it always held pressure without issue.
