So I finally ordered aftermarket hard bags. Of course there was no option for Valkyrie specific mounting. They come with universal brackets. My first issue is I go back and forth from stock exhaust to Cobra 6 into 6. My question is which pipes set higher on the bike ? I want to make sure I have the clearance for either. 2nd question is minimum clearance between the pipe and bag?

I mounted these bags with Cobra pipes installed. Works fine like this for both.

Sorry I couldn’t find the better side pic of the bags with Cobra pipes. I used a 2x4 (thin side) between the bag and the pipes to set the spacing

Thanks Chris. It looks like there is less clearance with the Cobra. I like the 2x4 idea, simple, keeps them level and even.

The clearance is just about the same with either. It’s the camera angle

I have truck stacks and the 1st gen Tsukayu Jumbo bags... there is about 3/4 between the pipe and the bag... zero issues.

the interstate hard bags have a hard panel under the bag, looks like crap clearance but it works well !

It's called a heat shield.  They often get all corroded and rusty and bent up, and can use a little care from time to time.

The rust problem would be less if people remove the bags and wipe the heat shields dry when they wash the bike. I guess it's how much you hose down the bike but in wet weather the heat shields stays on the dryer side from the exhaust heat etc.

I remove my heat shields every year to clean, repaint if needed and wax.

I remove the heat shields every time I do the rear end service.   Yeah, do wash the Valk several times a summer.  But never worried about the heat shield rusting.  It has no rust spots on it.   But then live in a rather dry part of the country.

Not to derail the thread too much, but I don’t get all this washing. I’ve had my bike twenty years. I think I I’ve washed it like a car with a hose maybe four or five times. Usually a wet towel then dry towel. Most of the washing was after a run to Daytona when the salt spray was bad. 25 year old bike and no rust or corrosion. After riding in the rain I sometimes turn the hose on to a bit more than a trickle to rinse off the swing arm and rear fender then bring her in for a good wipe down.

But you're going to anyway...

I don't get/understand half the crap people put on their vehicles, nor do I understand people who don't wash their stuff... at the end of the day people like what they like...

I suggest using EZ brackets. Makes mounting easier, quick detach for cleaning etc., and allows adding bottom support/shielding. I made supports for mine attached to the brackets.

Thanks, Tsukayu has something similar but not for the valk, I thought I was just stuck. It's on order.

On a note, I did add 1/4" Lexan support plate to the inside but one has cracked thus I suggest 3/16" aluminum to further help hard bag from cracking.

A note on pairing the quick mount and Tsukayu bags. The Tsukayu bags are recessed on the back side which seriously limits where you can mount the bags. So far I don't like how high they have to be mounted. With no modifications the bags will be about 4-5 inches above the exhaust. I may have to use the one size fits all brackets that came with the bags.
