I don't use it often...gas, hard items such as the recent router, etc., just enough to keep them active.  Got a call yesterday with no name so didn't answer, but they left a message and it referred to an issue with my Visa. So this morning, rather than call that number back, I called the credit union direct after noting two charges not mine totaling just over $400. They had already stopped them and the gal I talked with said they originated out of Mexico. The card was cancelled and a new one on the way. I check both my CC's(have 4) and my debit card activity at least 2-3 times a week, just glad this was caught early...was posted yesterday. Looks like Chico ees gonna hav to screw someone else!  Grin

That's happened to me twice.

My credit union caught both, and no charges to me, and new card mailed.

I was surprised to learn I had been in Ireland buying stuff, and later in Chicago buying stuff.

They could give me no idea how they were hacked, and as far as I know, I did nothing stupid.  So it's a mystery.

Happens to us every 2-3 years, most of the time USAA catches it first, a few times I've caught it and told them.

Had one with a different bank pissed us off, we helped 'em track down the dude, where he was, he was going up the eastern seaboard, our local police were on it, found a hotel he'd made a reservation at in Boston.

Texas police called the MA police, told 'em what was going on. They went to the hotel, stopped him from getting his room but refused to arrest him since he'd just be released anyway and it would just mean pointless paperwork for them. (That's what the Texas police told us he was told directly by the MA police on the scene.)

Local police at least got the MA police to send 'em ID on the guy.

Turns out he was on probation in Dallas for doing the same thing, and wasn't allowed to leave the state.

So even though the MA police couldn't be bothered to do anything, as soon as he came back to Texas Dallas police picked him up, rescinded his bail, and put him away for at least a little while for a probation violation.

We were on a MC trip a few years ago when the bank called and informed me that my debit card had been hacked.

They were cancelling it and would be issuing another one.

There was no option to allow me to use the card in the meantime.

Fortunately, we weren't far from home and I had another debit card from another bank account that I was able to use for gas to get us home.

Since then if I'm on a trip I make sure that I have enough cash on hand to get home on.

I have two Credit cards that I do the same with.

The bank has an option to lock them so that they can't be used.

I can lock and unlock them with an app on my phone.

Since, I rarely use them I keep them in the locked mode unless I need them.

Happened to me once while we were on a road trip.  I had mistakenly assumed that if I used by debit card and since it required an access code, that was safer than the credit card.  Not true

Got a call on my cell (don't remember exact time) about some fraudulent charges.  First a $1 then $100 from some place in Louisiana or Mississippi (I forget).  They took money out and then put it back (I guest to verify it worked),  The bank had blocked the card and denied the charges (I guess they looked suspicious).

We had a similar event occurs when I used a credit card at a restaurant in Saint John, New Brunswick.

So, from now on, I only use the credit card for gas.  Everything else ........ not on a card

Last week my wife's PayPal got hacked.   They started with a 50 cents charge, then a $6.99 charge.   USAA caught both of those and notified her.   She called and they canceled the card, issued a new card.  Called PayPal.   PayPal said we had authorized the purchases.  We had never even heard of this company!  We challenged and PayPal investigated and said we had approved those charges.  BS!!!   We called USAA again.   Somehow, someway we got our funds returned, not sure how that happened because, PayPal was not being helpful.   We assume USAA gave us our money back.

A couple of days later, my wife was doing her online banking and checked our savings account.  Low and behold, there was a withdrawal of .50 and $6.99.  The exact same charges going to the same place.  What the heck?   So, this time we called both PayPal and USAA.   We also checked our complete record of doing business with PayPal.   We had never done business with the company charging us and how the hell did they access our Savings?

Then, we saw another charge through PayPal for several hundred dollars.   Called both USAA and PayPal again.   PayPal stuck to their story that we had approved the purchase.   USAA told us to call back just as soon as we saw it hit our account.   We did.

We still don't know the whole story, it really depends on who you're talking to but, USAA made us whole and we're closing that PayPal account.   We don't need that crap!!

The no responsibility of paypal do Not surprise me. NOT the first time I've heard a similar tale. Couple friends of mine didn't take them long to ditch paypal. I have No idea How the C C companies determine fraudulent charges BUT I'm happy they Are on watch and catchin this crappola! As a Guess your prior purchase history may play into that determination. RIDE SAFE.

We have had 3 fraud charges on our credit card the past 20+ years from other NOT nearby states at all and for 1,000's of dollars each.  Just glad either we caught them ASAP or our credit card company did first.

How does this happen?

Once I thought our checking account would be hacked, so we got a new checking account number and checks because of it,   not taking chances on that either..

How does this happen?

Card skimmers. Devices that sit over the card reader that will skim the card info as you insert it and feed it back up to the bad guys. Sometimes they have human helpers (Think fast food drive thru) that will capture the info.

Once they have the info they'll clone it onto a blank card and go to town.

When traveling I have two credit cards for traveling, notify both banks that I'm traveling, and make sure I have "Get me home" cash somewhere hidden deep on the bike if both cards fail.

Had one with a different bank pissed us off,

Similar experience;  I notified my bank I was moving on the phone (from off to on base, in CA).  They said to do it in writing, and I said no I won't, I'm very busy, and you are on notice (I mean I had my card number, my pin, my account, they knew it was me).

So they mail the new card to the old house anyway (rental).  It takes me no time to discover the items purchased are delivered to the old house, ergo the people in the old house are using my new card (rocket science).  I tell the card company, I call the cops, I tell them I am a criminal lawyer and this is an easy bust.  I'll take them to the house, show them the paperwork, and testify with no subpoena.  No one gave two sh!ts.  Nothing was charged to me, but nothing happened to the thieves.  I called the bank again and told them they sucked dogs, cancel the card, we're done.  This time they believed me.

My understanding is my bank will back up my checking account as long as a  debit card is not attached.

So I have two accounts with my bank, one for checking, one for a debit card , which I keep it a low balance on.

I have two credit cards. Both credit cards and both bank accounts,  I hooked up to my phone and I get a text every time an account is used.

If my account info is updated, I get a text.

My credit cards also send an email for every activity.

It's stopped scammers 2 times so far.

Those sound like some good things to do.   I'll check and see if my bank offers that.   The only one that isn't applicable is the debit card with the low balance.   Don't have to worry about that, someone else (no names mentioned) ensures that balance stays low.  Wink
