Came into a deal on a Wing motor that has the reverse in it, thought it would be nice to have reverse in the trike. Not going to be an overnight success so most likely a project to complete later in the year after summer travel is through. That will give me time to collect the parts necessary to convert the Wing motor to a Valk motor, design an engagement system, etc., will buy parts needed without stripping them off the current I/S motor now installed. The motor has about 68k on it and lookes quite clean so I'm quitely excited about the project. I have a hydraulic table that I can use to set the motor on but it's only rated at 300 lbs. so might pick up the next larger unit rated for 500lbs. I'll be picking up the motor in the near future so I can start stripping off the Wing items and begin the process of converting it. Here's a couple pics of it.

The black apparatus above the oil fill cap is the engagement leverage. On the Wing it's activated by a lever on the left side using cables, I plan to fabricate a lever attached directly to it for positive action without cables. Might even mount some backup lights...and a beeper just for kicks!  Wink

Yes...and yes. All that intake plumbing you see is coming off and using my Valk carbs which I rebuilt about a year ago. Same motor so they fit. As for the lever, it's on the left side for both the Wings and the Jap models. It operates a set of cables that in turn, move the mechanism on the right. See the circled items on the picture, that's where the cables attach and I plan to fabricate a lever to mount on there in place of the cables. Fewer moving parts, fewer sources for problems.  Wink

Sure has a lot of junk on top of the motor but it's all coming off, being replaced by my Valk carbs. I'll have to buy a starter for it, can't use the one off my current motor since the reverse uses a different unit. It has two gears; one to drive the motor to start and the other to drive the reverse mechanism. I need to replace the t'stat housing with one from a Valk since that's different, as is the front timing belt cover. I'll be installing my new belts from the old motor along with the 4 deg T/W. The water pump setup is also different so that's another switch. The main issue will be swapping out the cam setup on both sides which will include the rocker arms, easier than exchanging the heads as a unit. Wiring might involve some thought, want to hook up a "Reverse" display light on the dash and just for grins I'll probably install some backup lights...and maybe a beeper. Had that on my '92 Wing, mostly for the looks/reactions it got. Back then, there was a company that made an aftermarket "backup light" that IIRC mounted somewhere around the license plate light. To use the reverse on a Wing, it has to be in neutral, flip the handle to engage, press the starter button. The Valk already has a neutral light, I'll add a "reverse" light on the panel and possibly instead of using the start button I'll install a separate button to activate the reverse starter function. I'll possibly run it all through a relay as a safeguard, not sure about that just yet.The relay won't activate the motor unless all else is in the proper mode. The Wing system monitors the speed at which you're backing up(really?), also the temp of the starter motor to prevent burning it out. A couple other things monitored as well but I don't see myself breaking any reverse speed limits or going in reverse for a couple blocks in an attempt to burn out the starter so some of those failsafes won't be included. It's going to be an interesting project that will eventually give me a reverse for my trike, and in the process will keep me out of the bars for a time.  Wink

That's a big project , but reverse will be wonderful on the trike.
Rather than move the cams , water pump, thermostat and carbs/intake  and 4* trigger wheel, It might be simpler to remove and swap the rear case and gears onto your Valk engine.
When installing the "new Goldwing "starter you have to be cautious not to break the reverse idler gear . DO NOT force the starter in place by pulling it in with the mount bolts.
Also when looking for the Wing starter remember to get one from an Aspencade or SE model. The Interstate version did not have reverse.
IIRC the Wing clutch slave cylinder is also different.
I didn't see if mentioned, a year on the Wing engine.
The Goldwing did not get the heavier built Valk transmission until I believe it was 1998.

I thought about the idea of making changes to the Valk motor, but when looking at the work involved what I'm proposing actually will be easier and quicker to accomplish. Plus, it would also involve splitting the cases to change out the shifting drum. I can get all the necessary parts for the reverse motor and have it all ready to go, then only need to swap out the motors. I believe the motor is from a '99 Wing and I know it was only the Aspencade & SE models that came with reverse(I had an Aspencade). Re. the heavier gears, they came with the '97 Valks and above, I don't know if the Wings got them the same year but would assume so.
