While looking for parts on Ebay, I noted any number of items listed with a price in the upper atmosphere. I forget which item I was looking at but it was listed at well over $100 so just for kicks I messaged the vendor that same item was available new from nearly any dealer at less than 1/3 their price. Their answer; "BS...not possible!" So just for kicks I sent the link to the vendor's general manager along with their own listing. Rec'd. a two word response; "thank you."  A number of vendors list small items they could put in a padded envelope and mail for less than $1.50, yet they list anywhere from nearly $10 to as much as $15-17. Again, I asked why not use the USPS for under $2 and they said they're required to use UPS by contract. Here I called BS, told them they can't do that per the feds, they can require it from in-house employees for purposes of a discount but still not that high. I didn't expect a response and that's what I got, it's obvious they make a good haul on overpriced shipping charges.

Tomorrow I plan to call Cyclemax in Ohio. They sell a 4 degree T/W but the shipping is again, ridiculous. I want the item but refuse to spend $6-7 for shipping. I might keep looking but sources appear to limited. If anyone has a suggestion as to a different source, please let me know.

John, I've heard all Valk timing wheels are (were) not created equally.

I gave my original 4* Air Lake to Big BF.

Believe you're right, as I recall it seems to be due to the shape of the trigger spokes. Some were made with rounded spokes and apparently didn't create a good enough trigger, maybe because it was too short...have no idea. Others were made with a more squared off trigger spoke that apparently created a stronger(longer?) spike, thereby making for an easier start, especially under adverse conditions. I've never had an issue with any I've installed.

John just take the stock wheel and notch it, Big BF did the original I think it was 1/8 notched out. If interested I will find the pic of it. I did it and it always worked fine. I know that you know about this and have not done it before, but why?

Drive all around town to every place you can think of that sells fasteners
and maybe find something that works OK, or press the button and
have it brought to your door? ...

I ship a small padded envelope just about every other day, this is a 4x7 bubble mailer less than 2oz of weight. First Class USPS is from $4.40 to $4.80 depending on where in the US it is going.
The same 2oz pkg to Canada is $14.25, the same pkg to the UK is $16.50
Prices seem high because they are.

I notched my trigger wheel on the I/S over ten years ago and have never had a problem. easy to do. Used a small triangle file. Checked it when I replaced the timing belts last year and it still hadn't moved  cooldude

Absolutely everything we buy is affected by the price of fuel and labor, both are going up quickly.
The only thing I can think of that isn't keeping up with inflation is, my take home income.

I’m needing a rubber grommet for a side panel. Online price is $4.19, shipping is $9.95. I’m going to check with local dealers to see what they can get it for me. Free shipping from two different vendors is $99.00 for one and $150.00 at the other. There was a time when I could find enough stuff to get to the minimums, not so much anymore.

Past experience is I will order the part and pay the shipping and before the part arrives I have found something else I must have.

There's a rubber grommet drawer at Home Depot. I got one of those
alternator covers for a "decent" price from Japan that someone posted
about not long ago. I went out and found my old wrinkled alternator
cover and the grommet on it is hard as a rock. I'm hoping they'll have
what I need at Home Depot.

Sometimes Amazon (if you have prime) is a win:

Honda 83601-MB0-000 - Grommet A -  $8.47 - free shipping - still a bit much

Honda wants a bunch of money each for those plastic push pins that hold
all the plastic onto Goldwings. I got a big box of generic ones for $19 on Amazon.

Back when I used to order stuff from HDL the minimum shipping charge was
$2.50, and I thought that was high...

No prime for me Cry  the grommet I need or should I say prefer is rectangular in shape and is key to holding a $200.00+ side cover in place so at some point I will just obtain the Honda part.

I think loose side covers can be zip tied against flying away.

How often do they really need to come off?

Amazon prime ships cheap / free because their shipping is in-house.  They have one of the biggest shipping companies there is. Secondly they have local warehousing all over the country.  Also they have GPS routing software that plans all deliveries for max efficiency - it even employs "right turn only" route planning (where possible).  UPS and (I think) Fedex uses the same route scheduling.  USPO not so much.
On postal shipping - for some size pkgs they are the cheapest and still quick.  Good luck on payment when making a claim however.  Also they charge too much for shipping insurance - if that's based on actuarials they are losing/breaking a LOT of stuff.  I have had many losses through them.  But UPS is worse on losses - then getting them to pay up takes an act of Congress - so I fired UPS years ago.  One part of postal costs - I always ship Priority Mail on small pkgs.  Part of the cost is they provide "free" boxes.  Of course I have to provide the padding/bubble pak.  That isn't cheap either.  I also average the charge on small USPO shipments for expediency.  eg. my cost to say VA or FL is more than you pay.
All shipping is going up quickly.  THANKS JOE.  Fuel costs, trucker & employee shortages almost all thanks to Joe.  I get the actual cost on pipe shipments for ea one, with no markup.  Same for other shipping - w/o markup but at my cost (allowing averaging for small stuff).

I called XXX this morning, after entering the order on the phone I asked about why the shipping was so high...nearly $10 for an item that didn't weigh but a few ounces. Then suggested he put it in a padded envelope and send 1st class for $1.50. Claims the post office loses too many things and ends up costing them money with replacement orders. I told them send it via the USPS and if lost I'll pay full price for a replacement...they refused, which told me the real reason for the shipping cost. Vendors making a profit off shipping is a real sore spot with me but isn't much that can be done about it since we usually need the part. I went ahead and ordered the part, realizing I was talking to the wall anyway. Angry

Well, knock me over with a feather! Went to the local Honda dealer with the part number I needed to see if they could get it for me and how much. The parts gal started punching buttons and said, “says we have two of them”! I told her let me one without asking how much. She brings the part and processes the sale, $4.16 including the tax. I’m a happy camper.

This is the cover and it uses 3 grommets to hold it on. Two might be sufficient, the missing third one allowed the cover to move in and out and rub against parts I didn’t want rubbed on!

Is it the oval grommet at the front of the body piece? If so do you have the part number handy? The one on my right side is mostly disintegrated as well, haven't looked at the one on the left. If not handy don't worry I'll do a lookup...

There could be the same grommet on the right side but it is different than the round grommets that the “pins” on the side covers pop into. The one I needed is for a straight slender post that attaches just above the rear corner of the valve over.

This gives you the info you may need.
https://www.hondapartshouse.com/oemparts/a/hon/5053edd5f870021c54be5072/engine-guard

The part I needed was #2. Apparently this grommet is used in multiple locations on the bike given the name they used in the description.

Appreciate it, looks like we need grommets to keep the same piece on, but different grommets... Managed to find the ones I needed for $5 each + 10 shipping or $8 each with free shipping on eBay.... Gotta love it...

Oh well, it's only money.

Sorry to turn this into a Goldwing thread, but with all the little bits and bobs I've been adding and replacing, the OP of this thread is very near and dear to me, and it seems everytime I think I've got everything together for a single large enough for free shipping order, the moment I hit "Submit" I figure out 3 more small things I need....

Shipping costs !

I want a piece of vinyl trim that I can't get from anyone locally. H-trim, nobody here has heard of such a thing.

I find it on-line. $12 for the piece and $269.00 for shipping ! I don't need it that bad.

Oh, and another example of why Amazon is #1 (And why I reluctantly say Prime is worth the money): In my quest to LED all the things, I put together an order on Amazon for some more LED lights for the Gold Wing. Put the order in a little before 10PM last night.

The LED bulbs were on my porch by 6AM this morning and were installed on the bike over my lunch hour.

And I neglected to take any before pics too...

At this point I THINK the only non-LED lighting left are my headlight high beams, and even though it's ugly color wise when I use 'em, MIGHT leave those Halogen as they do tend to project a bit further, albeit not as brightly....

Amazon Prime is one of the few things that I feel like is a bargain these days.

For $120/yr (going to $140) if you pay for it annually instead of monthly, you get:

Free 1-2 day shipping on most orders.

Amazon Prime Streaming service (Lots of good movies and programs).

Amazon Music (Streaming service).

And they've just added unlimited cloud storage for pics with an app that immediately backs up a pic when you take it.

My local Honda dealer has a good parts guy. Been dealing with him for years. He matches Partzilla's prices but won't match Ron Ayres Honda. He told me, "how do they sell their parts so cheep". So if I just need a few parts I go see Brian and he orders them for me as part of his parts order with no shipping charge. I usually have them in a few days. If I need a bunch of parts I order from Ron Ayres. They wave the shipping if you go over $129.

I've never had Prime, and I rarely ever pay any shipping.

If you're not in a hurry, most orders going ground are free shipping.   I'm never in a hurry.

But I only order things once in a while.

Given the price of gasoline here has risen $1 in the past 48 hours, driving around town is NOT an option. Click "okay" before the shipping rises to $100.

I went to get a couple of 8 foot treated 2X12s yesterday. $40.00 each! That's
right, a 16 foot 2X12 is almost $80.00!!! I have a couple of 2X10s on hand, I
think I'll use those...
