Think of the Tail of The Dragon without guard rails and without the traffic.  I would much rather ride it than the TOD.  It has been a few years since I last crossed it, but it was paved except for 1 or 2 miles on the eastern end close to the dam.

It has been at least 4 years since I rode it.  Two miles of it was gravel at that time.  If its still gravel, I would expect it to be muddy this time of year.

Mark, looks like it's in the Gorge area. I-40 Western NC. Joe May is probably familiar with it.

Turns gravel at the Tennessee / North Carolina state line where the Appalachian trail crosses it. TN side is pavement. Rode it many times over the years.
