....in 4 days!

This getting older thing is way over rated! The last almost three weeks has been nothing but a pain ..... a literal pain.  Angry
Being in the HVAC trade, I am on my knees a whole lot servicing and repairing furnaces. My left knee started to swell up and I put it up to kneeling to much so I better wear the knee pads a little more often....hate those things! They didnt help at all as it got much worse. Then my left elbow got tender and then my left foot. Well when it got my foot I knew I was in for a gout attack and man did it get me  Cry!!
I have had it before but not in so many joints at the same time. The anti-inflammatory makes me dizzy but I gotta take it as much as I hate to.
I know I have to watch what I eat but this time around the only thing I did different was using a bit of honey in my coffee. Then I read that honey is a no no if you are prone to gout. Gets to the point where I am scared to eat.....  Undecided

you do not drink beer do you?  I know beer is bad if have gout spell.  My dad, who drank 3-4 per day usually, had gout in his ankles a few times (and often normally) where his skin would burst and bleed was so swelled up VERY bad unable to put any pressure/weight on his feet at all.

So far, knock on wood, no gout issues but my hips are getting bad needing replacements am sure before age 60.  Surgeon dr. told me to take 4x's daily 2 pills each time switch back and forth aleve and acetaminophene to take the edge off of the hip pressure when bending over or walking.

best of luck in the gout issues.  Might have to go on meds if gets bad enough to get it back down to normal.  sure sounds painful especially if gets to the point where you cannot stand on your feet at all like my dad had often.

Now I know what my dad meant saying to me when he was age 55 and up that me being in 20's had NO clue how much misery he was in the last 20 years of his life.   I am starting to feel what he felt, well sort of in only minor ways so far.

Highly recommended, also helps prevent a certain type of kidney stones which I'm prone to develop. So far, no stones and my right big toe only hurt one time in nearly 15 years. That was when I dropped a 10mm socket on it...which was on my rattle gun at the time.  Wink

If honey is bad, find out if Blue Agave syrup is acceptable. I get it at Costco in a 2 pack.

I am prown to gout due to my kidney disease. I had 7 bouts last year. Beef is a trigger for me which sucks since I love steak. I was off of maintenance drugs last year which made it worse. I'm on Allopurinol now. No attacks since. When I was having issues last year prednisone worked like a charm. When I started hurting I called my doc. Sent me an RX for prednisone and within 2 days the majority of the pain went away enough I could at least function. Be careful though if you're diabetic it drives your blood sugar out of control. I feel your pain. That is some of the worst pain I've ever been in. Try the prednisone,it worked for me...Good luck Terry...

X2, I don't have any helpful advice but hope and pray this will end for you as quickly as possible.   I agree that getting older isn't something we're gonna enjoy but, it sure as hell beats the alternative.

What I'm discovering is that much of what I would like to still do can only be accomplished if, I find another way.   It's constant effort.    Never used to ask for help, now I do.   This is the only body I'm going to have and my warranty is apparently running out so, I have decided that if I want to keep using it, I better take care of it.   Should have realized that years ago but, live and learn.

Good luck and take care.

Hey I can feel for ya. This getting older is for the birds, I like to say it’s not the years but the mileage.

In late May of last year I tweaked my left arm removing and carrying the bench seat of my van all alone. Then some time in mid - late June I was doing some clean up yard work at the shop and loaded the big 90 gallon trash can with crap and tried to dump it into our main 3 yd dumpster and something went out.

Long story short, I thought I could work through it and until late January did not see the doctor. I had the tendon to a point of almost torn and some ulnar nerve issues. Got a shot of lidocaine/cortisone in the elbow and base of the middle finger at the palm and in rehab for another 3 weeks. Doctor and PT asked how the heck did you work and live with this and I just shrugged my shoulders and replied painfully. I thought work through it and it would go away.

Anyway, good luck and get better,,spring is coming and time to be able to ride.

I feel your pain, although I doubt I have ever experienced what you have. I have a small issue with gout that always attacks me in my left wrist. I say small issue but when it hits me, with in hours I’m looking for relief. Prednisone is my go to for relief. I’m diabetic so I have to watch that side of things too.

Back in the late 60's found out that I am prone to gout.   The drugs they gave me cause stomach issues.  Sister, who is a dietitian, told me to cut the amount of some proteins and cut down on the beer.   I did,  My uric acids levels have been more normal since then, though every so often after too much of good stuff, feel a tinge or two in several joints.  Also drink lots of liquids, preferably water.

As a side note the gout issue kept me out of the military.

I suffered the pain of gout for a few years.

The Dr. prescribed Indomethacin which got me stoned. Horrible. I used it when I really needed to. A few times I had to use crutches because the pain in my left ankle and knee was so bad I couldn't walk.

New Dr - younger - and he did his initial questions. I told him gout. He asked what I'd been prescribed. I told him and that it only helped after the flare up.

He prescribed Allopurinol and my life changed.

I tried all the home remedies. None worked for me.

I have three meds to take. Colchicine, Febuxostat and Indomethacin.
Beef is a main trigger for me. I went 5+ years alcohol free and had several gout episodes in that time. I’m presently sitting here having dizzy spells while the indomethacin does it’s thing. Lasts for about an hour then m okay. I’ll be making an appointment with my Dr. as I’m confused as to why I’m taking both the febuxostat and colchicine as from what I’m read from the pharmacy, both are daily life long meds just like allopurinol. Allopurinol is what I was first prescribed a couple years back but taking it made my whole being feel like a giant toothache…….hence the febuxostat. Now, the febuxostat is making red blotches on my face and just my face that flake dry skin. Trust me I’m not happy with any of this stuff they have given me but I’m not sure how many options there are. I have tried to manage on my own without the meds with a degree of success by avoiding beef and drinking way more water than I ever have in my life. Water was the number one thing prescribed by a naturopath. It definitely helps.

Those on allopurinol…..are you able to resume your regular diet, like having a burger once in a while?

My knee.

My foot.

My face.

Yes, yes, yes.

To the point I can take half the Allopurinol prescription 2/3 out of 7 days.

Gout is not good. It will mess up your joints for later life.

Keep drinking the water.

Take magnesium citrate for kidney stones. They can follow along right behind gout.
