Greetings All! My 01 I/S is coming thru the alternator flu. I have a new standard 40amp going in today.
As fat as the old one goes: fried/shorted. But is the aluminum house still good? I’m thinkin chrome the housing? Then disassemble new good one and move all new parts over to the chromed housing and permanently remove the plastic (heat trapping) cover! Has Anybody tried this?

I've not heard of it being done, however from experience I've found that a chromed unit doesn't run quite as cool. Apparently the extra coating of metal on any given part seems to retain heat more than a "naked" part. I'm sure it would still be cooler than the original without the cover. Just my opinion on that.

It isn't so much the extra metal as it is the albedo of the applied copper/nickel/chrome layers. They reflect both infrared and visible light back into the alternator.

Painting the housing black has the opposite effect.

Curious, isn't it under a chrome cover thus not to be seen? If anything the chrome cover can be very high $$$ though it was posted awhile back for OEM for $$ but slow delivery time from Japan. I'd leave it alone but...

I got two of those from Japan. Ordering them when you don't need them is
the right time. I forget the price now, way too much and way way less than
ordering them through normal channels...

Howdy 4s2many!

I think a chromed alternator may look really good.  If you do go that route, it would be great if you could post some pics of the process.  You're liable start a trend as an alternative to our bubbling, heat trapping covers (I'm on my second one).

I'm gonna peel the wrinkled chrome and paint it to as close as I can match the green base color paint. New covers Are too danged much. RIDE SAFE.

While still kind of expensive, if ordered from the Japan warehouse you can get a cover for $48.68 + shipping.  I ordered a couple in the past from them and was more than happy to wait the month or so for arrival vs paying the $150 and up you typically see posted here or on ebay.
