Don't threaten me with a good time

Greeneville, TN

https://www.foxnews.com/great-outdoors/500-pound-bear-removed-tennessee-college-damage

A large bear that had made a home near a Tennessee college was tranquilized by wildlife officers and safely moved to a new location.

Over the past few years, the 500-pound animal had become more comfortable venturing closer to humans to obtain food.

However, sightings of the bear near populated areas increased and the animal caused multiple instances of property damage.
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency posted about the bear on Facebook, explaining that it has been sighted multiple times over the past years near Tusculum college.

Initially, the bear appeared to simply be looking for food and sightings were infrequent. Since the bruin recently began causing more trouble near the college, state wildlife officials decided to take action.
"A 500-pound black bear living near Tusculum college in Greeneville had become habituated to human and unnatural foods and was relocated to a remote area of the Cherokee National Forest yesterday," the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency wrote on its Facebook page. "Wildlife Sgt. David Carpenter says the bear had regular access to garbage, birdseed, and pet food had and been in the area for a few years but ramped up its activity and property damage last year. Wildlife Officers decided to trap it then due to the increasing potential for negative interaction, but were unsuccessful after the bear changed its travel routine."

Fortunately, wildlife officers were able to locate the bear in the wild. "Recent activity indicated it was back to its old ways and Officers Ryan Rosier, Austin Wilson, and Sgt. Carpenter located the bear in a small vacant wood lot and were able to free-range tranquilize it," the post continued. "They worked the bear up and requested the assistance of the Greeneville Fire Department to help move it to the transport cage due to its size. They were glad to help and were able to use some of their specialized equipment to expedite the process. TWRA is extremely thankful for their help!"

If I was to guess, same culprit that left this in my yard last year.

Whoa!!

Those pics make me wonder, who's fastest, you or myself.   I know I can't outrun the bear, I'm hopeful I'm faster than you are.  Wink

"Move to Tennessee!" they said....

"It's God's country!" they said....

Yeah, about that.... we may get a little warmer here in The Republic, but we don't have 500 pound bears!

One should always have a buddy with them and carry a .22 pistol when in bear country.

A single shot from the .22 to your buddy's kneecap, and you should be able to escape safely.

Talk about bear encounters....
In the early 60's I was stationed in northern Maine(Loring AFB) and we were living in a mobile home off base. We were awakend about 0300 to the rather large mobile home rocking a bit and a grunting going on outside. I peeked outside and it was a huge bear rubbing his rump on the back corner of the trailer. The back end of it sloped up the last few feet and was just the right height for his big hind end. A local guy up the road about 1/4 mile had some dogs he called red bone hounds, I thought they were Rhodesian Ridgebacks, but if there was a bear in the area you could hear them set up a howling fuss over a mile away. Those dogs had been carrying on for hours even before we went to bed.

Back in my Air Force CA days, the wife and I backpacked up into Sequoia Nat'l Park.  We attended the mandatory bear briefing.

It started snowing hiking straight up (all the trails were straight up).  We were rookies and carried too much weight.

We didn't make the planned distance, so stopped at a boulder strewn site where fires were allowed.

I put all food and anything that might remotely smell like food in a bag, and hoist it up a tree a 100yds from camp.

It got freaking cold that night and the fire was good.  Then we heard several (black) bears snorting and fooling around across an open meadow in front of us.  I made the fire bigger.  I had carried a double stack 9 in a shoulder rig and that provided some sense of well being, but it was hard to crawl in that little pup tent with the bears still audible.  I didn't sleep real well that night.

I've got my own bare bear story but, not sure it's appropriate for this venue. Wink

It ain't the bears in Tennessee that you need to worry about. It's the Lone Star ticks. Thanks, Texas.

I live on a river in northern M.N. Bears are always around. That's where the dog comes into play. We have always had a dog to give us a heads up. First time the latest dog ran over the river bank after something she came back in a hurry. I told my wife she knows her job now. Spring is when you have the most encounters with them. They come out of there dens hungry and food is hard to find. We have to take in our bird feeders or they will not make it overnight. We always know when there is a bear around. Dog will growl but not run after what she knows is out there. If your a woman and having your cycle you should stay out of the woods. No joke it's been proven to up your odds of an attack. My wife is past that age so i just smear honey on her shoes.  Wink

Ever hear the story(joke) about the Texan that visited Alaska and one night in a bar stated he wanted to become a true Alaskan. So he was told he had to have relations with an Eskimo woman and wrestle a grizzly. Next day he left on his journey and was gone for quite a few days. When he reappeared he was all beat up, bitten and had some pretty bad scars. Walked into the bar and asked "ok, where's that Eskimo woman I'm supposed to wrestle?" Roll Eyes

yah, bears are plentiful in TN.  Wife and kid stayed few miles south of Gatlinburg TN in a cabin with other cabins nearby in a wooded area.  Mom and 2 cubs came right up to their porch just hanging out last year down there.  I do not think black bears would be too bad though, grizzly's/polar bears are another thing much bigger and more agressive, or so I have heard, not willing to find out.
