What in the world besides a major short would cause that?  Shocked

Thought the alternator died, but thankfully it wasn't that.

Long term corrosion, dust, damp, electrical resistance and ultimately heat.

Either that or gremlins.   Smiley

Do you have a stereo system/amp installed on your bike?
Any odd charging or jump-start attempts recently?

A bunch of auxiliary lighting wired into the harness side of the fuse will do it too.

Yep, self-inflicted.   uglystupid2  Old battery lost charge. Trickle charger wouldn't charge it. Attempted to jump start the bike just to warm it up a couple of months ago. Old battery actually exploded when the jumper cables touched the supplying battery. I'm sure that's when it happened.  Roll Eyes

I bought a new battery, started it and let it run a short time. Then, due to bad weather, I periodically put the trickle charger on it. Rode it for just a few miles a couple of times. Apparently, there was enough juice in the battery, coupled with being "topped off," that I was able to get a ways down the road Sunday before depleting the battery.

Stupid me was the ultimate cause.

Just so we know, was the battery you tried to jump start from in a running vehicle?

I knew to ask because my buddy did the same thing a few months back. The truck he jumpstarted from was turned off, so the battery didn’t explode, but the 55a fuse went kaput and he couldn’t figure out why the bike was dead.

I told him, “you really blew the dogbone on this one.”

I keep one of these in my saddlebag and one in my truck:

It makes you wonder if the dogbone fuse wasn't there for just this purpose. Wasn't there a spare fuse in the dogbone box, forget already.

Correct. There’s a spare dogbone on the side, right next to it.

Yes, stupidly. I knew better and, yet, did it anyway. When the bike battery blew up the instant I touched the car battery terminals with the jumper cables, I nearly shat myself. Thankfully, the bike battery was dry, so no battery acid anywhere.

My bike battery exploded. Thankfully, it was dry, so there wasn't any acid blown everywhere, but I had to change my shorts.
