My alternator is not bad - yet, but I can foresee the day that it needs replacement.  The thread that discusses the different alternator options is of 2018 vintage.  I know about using a Gold Wing unit and clocking for use in the Valk (thanks Mark).  I am looking for the piece of mind of having a spare.  I have spare petcock cover set; spare throttle cables; spare drive shaft, pinion, u-joint /boot; kick stand bolt/spring so why not an alternator?  31100-MT2-015 is the Honda part number, but they are very pricey.

I see used OEM units for sale on eBay, or aftermarket units on Amazon, Walmart etc.  Pinwall probably has used OEM as well.  Which ones should be avoided?  I think the guy that used to rebuild MARS is no longer doing it.

Pinwall generally lists mileage of the salvage bike. I
have had a low-mileage $60(?) Pinwall alternator
on my Valkyrie for several years now. And another
one ready for next time...

I also found a used OEM on eBay that's holding up.  The seller said it was from a bike with around 22k miles.  $65 shipped.

I tend to not tear into parts trying to fix them, but may look into refurbishing the old alternator for next time since it's just sitting around.

Just bought a used Gold Wing alternator off eBay for $87 and a new set of OEM brushes.  Besides the brushes, what else is involved in "re-conditioning?"  I will try and clean it up a bit, but not going to paint or anything else beyond appearance.
