Evidently the pilot became incapacitated. I thought the passenger was amazingly calm and controlled for someone who didn’t know what to do. His voice has no detectable amount of stress to me. And his landing looked frigging superb !

Just goes to show that "most" folks could fly a fixed wing with little to no training.

I'll leave it at that.  Wink

Maybe most can. I’ve flown in “Bush Planes” for years. I doubt my chances would be better than 50-50. I’m certain that you would have heard stress in my voice over the radio.

I'll grant you that the passenger/pilot was calm and didn't go to crap but, in my experience, fixed wings aircraft are not that difficult to handle.   Of course, I'm talking about fixed wing AC, prop driven.   Although, I'm one of those guys that thinks they can operate just about anything.  Wink  Which brings up the question of hovering.    The most difficult task I ever undertook was a stabile hover.    After that, it's all gravy.  Wink

I think I could handle with minimal problems, but then, I made it through intermediate phase SNFO  - instrument Nav, Jetways and lowlevels. Navigation (with charts and at least VOR) and I could probably get to an airport. However, I have minimal stick time, so LANDING might be "fun"....

Was always told that any landing you can walk away from is a good one.  Wink

During my MTP (test pilot days) I had eight engine failures in a single engine helicopter.   Picked my LZ and autorotated to it.   Never bent a skid and they all flew again after we put a new engine in the aircraft.    Practice makes perfect (execution).  Wink

Don't get me wrong, I'm impressed with the coolness of the guy that put her down without damaging the AC.   He did well.   cooldude

Rams, I'll have you know that I took off in a rotary wing AC at the Alleghany County Airport, Flew it under the Ft. Pitt bridge at Pittsburgh's Point and landed it safely back at ACAP, with absolutely no training.

(It was on Microsoft Flight simulator, but hey, credit where credit is due.)

At one point I wanted to pursue a commercial pilot's license in lieu of a college education. My parent's backed this endeavor, I went to the local airport with a pilot school, they had a $20 "You gonna vomit in a Cessna?" flight (They didn't call it that, but I could read between the lines.)

I signed up. I figured they'd take off, wiggle the wings, and land, I mean it was only $20!

Nope... I did the full pre-flight with the "real" pilot, we got in the cockpit. He asked me if I had any flight experience...

"Well, no, but I've been playing flight simulators since I was 12".

"Good enough! Here's the throttle, go to (Whatever) speed, then rotatee!"

Then proceeded to visibly and demonstrably cross his arms....

"Oh cool! "

So I got to the runway, throttled up, got to rotation speed, rotated, climbed out, turned when he said to turn, etc... Had a BLAST! Got to buzz my parent's house, etc, flew around for nearly an hour. He wanted me to stall it and recover, I requested we save that for a later lesson.

...he wanted me to land it too.... I requested we save THAT for a later lesson too.... although in hindsight I'm fairly confident I could have safely, if not smoothly, gotten us back on the ground.....

LOVED it....

(Long story, short version - at the time I had a paralyzing fear of needles. Was told I'd need a blood sample for the FAA physical, dropped the whole endeavor right then and there. Sad )

Anyway.... Beyond all that, ya' know we're all thinking this too:

Credit acknowledged!    cooldude   Ya done good.
I once had a friend ask me to teach him to hover his remote controlled toy helicopter.   I turned him down, I have absolutely no idea how one flies an RC remotely.   He ended up destroying it within a few days.   coolsmiley
