This question was posed on a Goldwing board and I immediately thought about our Valkyries. Not cheap, but similar to the taxi tires that have been used. I’m probably a long way from needing a new back tire but wonder if this could be a good choice, thoughts?

Also another tidbit I picked up on the Goldwing board is it seems many of them think that a run flat tire is the way to go on dark side tires, what say you? I couldn’t wait to get get run flats off my Corvette due to ride and handling issues but that’s a different horse than a bike.

Can't say I have experience with RF tires.  But I do think they are unneeded compared to a normal DS tire.  After all, car tires have steel belts generally, much stronger carcass; already are unlikely to go flat compared to a bike tire.  And if the RF tire has worse handling, like say stiffer ride, that'sd a tradeoff not worth it to me.  I personally have tried many DS tires and prefer the Austone for it's profile and height.  Handles very close to a bike tire w/o the bad behaviors of say a wide, squarish tire and with the DS benefits.  Way better traction especially in the wet, taller so it drops the rpms for fast economical cruising, puncture resistance, longevity, more load capacity and lower cost.  I have never had a DS tire lose air.  Have punctured bike tires several times.  I do run with Ride-On to balance the tire and provide leak resistance if it is punctured.

I recently put a run-flat ( 195/55RF-16 Yokohama AVID ENVigor ZPS Run Flat SL ) on my '08 GL1800 and so far, after around 2,000 miles, absolutely loving it.

The reason for run flats isn't so much the ability to survive a flat, but the stiffer sidewalls they provide.

Not necessarily a requirement, but nice to have if it's available.

I've been enjoying the stiff sidewalls on the Zeetex CT-1000 light truck tire.  Sure handles well.

The comments I read about runflats did have to do with the sidewall. Seems the Goldwing guys thought that there was too much squirm and flexing of the sidewalls on none runflats. What I gather the tire in my link was a popular tire with sports car guys in the 60’sand 70’s before steamroller sized tires. I like the idea of the taller 80 series,if it fits and doesn’t cause handling problems. The guy who brought up the subject had installed one on his 1500 Wing and liked it and wa wondering about the 1800 Wing figment.

I remember you posting about that when you put it on, what size did you go with?

John,
You've ridden the same tire that Valkarado is recommending.   I've had one on the bike you rode at InZane.

Not much to tell.    Pretty sure someone spilled some slick stuff on the street and my underpowered scooter might have spun the tire a bit going out of a driveway onto the busy street as I made that ninety degree turn.   Mr. Smith must be thinking of someone else. Wink

John,
I'll be calling Judy today, she needs to ensure you're taking your meds.  Wink
