Hi All,

Running a 1999 Tourer with factory windshield.  I wear a Shuberth C3 Pro helmet.  I am getting some buffeting on top of my helmet. If I lower myself into the bike while riding, it goes away and I get in that clean pocket of air. Has anyone else had this happen? What recommendations do you all have?  I do not ride without a helmet so I don’t know nor will I know if that is the cause although I’m sure it is.  I really like the Tourer windshield, but don’t know if it can be raised or something else I can try?  Anything I can add to windshield to get the air higher? I am 5’9” tall and I find it odd that I have to lean down to get that clean air when I am on the low end of height ranges. Any suggestions or recommendations are greatly appreciated.

I have to assume you have a standard height windscreen.  19 inches from the top of the headlight opening to the top of the windscreen.

I don't know anything about your helmet but, if that buffeting is a problem, contact Clearview and order a taller windscreen.   A very good company to deal with, they can solve your problem.   I believe the next size up is a 21 inch.

Thanks. It’s the factory windshield that says Tourer on the front with the vent opening in it.

The OE Tourer hardware says Tourer on it, but that doesn't mean your shield is original equipment, and if it has a vent I think it's not OE.  Also the OE shield was polycarbinate, with a hard coating.

I think your issue is shield height, not your helmet.

Ron says OE Tourer shields were 19 inches from the top of the headlight opening to the top of the windscreen.  Is yours?

Clearview makes very nice (vented or non-vented) replacement shields to fit OE Tourer hardware.  And BTW, that hardware is hard to come by.  Their shields are not polycarbinate, and thus easier to polish out dings, rubs and scratches.

When I need a windshield, I want the top about even with my nose sitting comfortably, not slouched and not sitting up to attention either.  This lets me just look over, but still under the slipstream (helmet too).  If (when) a shield gets terribly fouled (like by mud) on the road, you must be able to see over it to see at all.  But you also want to be able to slouch under it (like in driving rain).  Tape a ruler (or something) on yours, sit on the bike level (and it's more accurate to shim the side stand up and put your feet on the pegs, than to have your feet on the ground, which alters seating postiion), and work out how much taller you need.  And you need to do this on the seat you are keeping (or wait for it to be delivered first).

And some guys like to add little spacers to the bottom shield mounts, to push it out a little, which makes it lay back a little on top, more like a fairing and more aerodynamic; and if you want this, then it needs to be a little longer than it would be if not laid back a bit.

Unfortunately, according to their website it seems they're still having trouble getting vents from their supplier. This has been ongoing for quite awhile.

Thanks everyone. I just measured it and it is indeed a 21” tall windscreen.

I'm 6'3", long torso, and the buffeting on my aftermarket windscreen ('97 standard) was brutal.  I'd get a pounding headache if I rode more than a couple of hours.  I tried an MRA Vario Xcreen, I tried raising, lowering, doing anything I could (moved forward in an uncomfortable crouch sometimes) to escape the buffeting - felt like someone was rapping on my head with a small hammer!

Finally, I bought Baker Air Wings and those completely resolved it.  Completely.  I sit in a bubble of perfect air now, it is astonishing.

Might look into some Memphis lowers. They reduced the buffeting for me.

Thanks everyone. Please explain how the baker air wings or lowers affects the air up around my helmet?  Is the air coming around my windshield then up?

I’m no air dynamics expert. But the way it was explained to me was that the turbulence was caused by air coming up around the tank. I do know that the lowers definitely helped with the buffeting.

I added lowers to my standard with a 19" shield (Slipstreamer Classic) which is the proper height for me. No buffeting but the motor heat becomes a factor. I'm thinking that the motor sticking out in breeze is causing this issue as I didn't have this issue with the V twin 1100 Spirit using a proper fit 19" shield (19" Viper). A lot of folk use Baker Air Wings to help with this issue.

I wear the same Shuberth and also have Baker Airwings.  I always ride with the top wings closed to prevent the turbulence coming from underneath.  I have a Woody's Fairing, but without the upper airwings blocking the wind, I get tons of turbulence.  On a really hot day, I will open them for a while, but not long.  I doubt that my windshield is 19" to the headlight.
