The More Things Change… Diary of a ‘Fair Weather’ Rider…

All those years of vacation and long weekend riding… of diligently striving to maximize the very limited opportunities to be out there. Yep, that naturally resulted in riding in all sorts of weather conditions, and some of that was not only unpleasant, but it was also downright foolish. A corollary of that experience was the fantasy it produced of extended riding almost totally free of those downside aspects. I’m pretty certain I’m not alone with this line of thought…

Well, the time finally came when this blossoming ardent practitioner of the long ride could turn his focus away from the more usual pursuits of normalcy and do what he so longed to do: To blissfully ride anywhere and everywhere in near ideal weather conditions. I was as giddy about that imminent prospect as a schoolboy about to receive his very first long-anticipated romantic kiss!

The first problem with that notion is the simple fact ideal conditions almost never exist! Sometimes they can approach ideal, but most often they are simply to be found somewhere within a perceived ‘acceptable range’ of conditions… OK, that isn’t so hard to grasp…

Now, about that ‘range’… Of course that will vary considerably among different individuals, but it will also vary considerably over time for any one rider, too. As we age, as our health ebbs and flows, as the urgency to actually ride waxes and wanes, what we consider tolerable or desirable will shift a bit one way or the other, also.

Sudden, unexpected weather developments, social commitments made, not to mention changing moods, and whims can catch us with our guard down and send even veteran riders off into… Yeah, I’m talking about those self-inflicted, uncomfortable boo-boos that give us pause while producing furrowed brows, exaggerated grimaces, and blushing red faces!

My usual reaction to unpleasant or especially to adverse weather conditions has been to simply not ride. Yep, I’ve been known to hunker down for days at a time, even weeks on occasion. There are even a few instances where I’ve remained on the bench at the big game for a few months! No need to explain, of course, that passively observing from the sidelines is woefully lacking compared to the exhilarating excitement of actually logging game time on the field of play… Oh well, choices have to be made and consequences have to be accepted…

Last winter’s unusual rain and cold temperatures, often combining, drove us to the southernmost tip of Texas for about three weeks. When nasty weather patterns appear to set-in, or if I figure to be someplace for more than a few days, the choice of a house, cabin, or apartment short-term rental comes quickly to mind. I rented a house for most of our time beside the confluence of the Rio Grande and the Gulf of Mexico last winter, for example.

Those units are far better than a motel room when maximum mobility and/or flexibility are not essential needs at the moment. Those obviously have more elbow-room available, but they also offer opportunity to pursue the elusive culinary arts. The word ‘elusive’ used here is emphatically a gross understatement!

Some progress has been noted, however, as bacon is no longer routinely burned… although, ‘extra crispy’ is still a bit too frequent. Ribeye steaks are no longer automatically converted to leather on a grill, either. Alas, the production of decent biscuits ‘n gravy has never materialized, but that does remain a strong desire.

This summer we’ve found ourselves trapped in the deep south in the midst of a prolific and seemingly protracted heat wave! The weather experts have all sorts of charts and graphs, radar screens, and impressive sounding explanations and forecasts, but the bottom line is, it’s downright hot and likely to remain so for another extended period of time! Yep, our girl’s rider decided to wimp out, hunker down, and seek refuge in a rented ‘bungalow’ for a couple of weeks.

Wimping out ain’t hard, my friends, and that postulation is becoming easier to verify all the time! All ya gotta do is take the easiest path by simply not riding. Naturally that is not a good long-term solution for any true rider, but for the faint of heart, weak in the knees sissies among us, it does offer a viable temporary alternative to certain discomfort. I know of what I speak here, as I’ve seen me do it myself many times!!! Soon, that strategy will be employed yet again…

Yep, I’ve rented a small house in North Carolina for sixteen days, and I plan to give their A/C unit a vigorous workout. Naturally, that stove will see some action, as well. Who knows, some sawmill gravy might even be given more attempts. Hey, I haven’t even ruled out experimenting with the gas grill included in the deal, either. Mostly, though, I plan to just lie around continuing my mastery of the art of being lazy… cool, to be sure, but lazy, nonetheless. Funny how this all started…

We had to miss InZane this year because of a must-make, can’t change appointment in Montgomery, AL, with my urologist the day after IZ began in Montana. Oh well, sometimes we simply have to prioritize our activities maturely and legitimately. Well, I received a call from MitchO and SmokinJoe while in Montgomery suggesting I ride out there anyway, as they planned to hang around awhile in the northern Rockies after IZ.

That sounded really good to this rider who longed for some new adventure anyway! I began thinking about all the enjoyable aspects of such a trek… Then, I checked the weather… Oh my, the ride all the way out there would be near brutal, so quite naturally hesitation soon overtook the advancing fantasy so recently begun. I resolutely decided we’d just do our riding earlier in the day then get off the road earlier and limp out there anyway. Then…

The morning of departure, I strolled out at 4:30am to remove our girl’s cover and then do the loading exercise… Dang! It was dark, of course, but it was also still surprisingly warm, plus it was as humid as a jockstrap following a rigorous workout in the gym! Say what?!!! Do we really want to ride long days in this every day for the next week or so? OK, looks like it’s time to start working on some plausible, manly sounding excuses to offer my friends for not showing up after all…

So, instead of riding towards a Great Divide rendezvous amongst the snow-capped mountains of western Montana with my dear friends, I clicked on the AirB&B website icon and began pondering where we might land that wouldn’t require much foul-weather riding… and that ‘bungalow’ seemed to beckon to me. Next thing I knew, I’d committed and paid for the rental, so no turning back now…

I imagine that while I’m there taking a break from the heat, I’ll also engage in more than a little fantasizing about riding exclusively in fair weather conditions… just like I’ve always done! Dang! The more things change, the more they do indeed seem to remain the same!!!

Boy do I hear you Bruce. On Monday I departed Minneapolis for a 2 week riding vacation. First destination  was Akron OH for a very short stop , 1 hour on day 2 with a night in Zanesvile. The entire length of the Tripple Nickel on Wednesday with a final destination on Wednesday in Maggie Valley. 527 miles in high heat and humidity with gusty winds kicked my back side. I booked 5 nights in Maggie Valley. Looking at weather for Minneapolis of high heat and humidity into Tuesday evening I’m dreading a run for home on Monday. My second week I had a tentative plan to make a run for the Twisted Sisters. Weather looks to be around a 100*. Maybe I’ll try that in SEPTEMBER. It’s finally cooled of in Maggie Valley. I did get to my wants in Maggie Valley, Wheels Through Time and Grandfather Mountain. Weather played a roll in that today, you could only go half way up into the park as they had very high winds. This trip was delayed since July 17, 2016 because of work and Covid-19. 2 1/2 weeks ago I made the decision that if I just keep “thinking “ about this trip it may not happen again this year. Some times you just have to top the fuel tank, trun the key and thumb the starter button.

Well, not knowing all these options open to you, I thought you might show up in Corbin Kentucky this weekend. I think tomorrow will be a reprieve from the heat we have experienced this week. Sounds like you have chosen wisely given the forecast for this coming week though. Hope you got a good report from the he Doc, and enjoy some solitude. Maybe contemplate the role affairs and give Joe some words of wisdom, heaven knows he needs some.

Sorcerer,

The long ride is certainly a challenge much of the time... That's but one of the reasons there aren't more folks doing it. Tough cookies like you suck it up and go anyway! Any ride is typically better than no ride, and most on this board understand... Yep, sometime ya just gotta top off the tank, turn the key, and thumb the starter button... then deal with whatever you encounter! Obviously, you already know all that, I'm just pondering your latest adventure... and admiring your spunk! Congrats on making the ride anyway!!!

DDT

John,

Truthfully, I'd heard you mention the Corbin thing, but I actually didn't know much about it. In fact, I don't recall even seeing any posts or announcements regarding it. In any event, the very limited capacity of my thinker muscle retention cache didn't hold it, so when I became absorbed with dealing with the heat issue, my focus narrowed to seeking relief only... Alas, I hope y'all have a good one, my friend!

Yes, I did get a good report from the doc! His plan for dealing with my 'condition' has worked effectively so far, it appears... At least he and I both are quite happy with the way things are going! Still no indicators of recurrence or anything else going on, so... I'm good for another three months anyway!

DDT

Evan,

Funny, I was admiring your toughness to tackle the trek westward to Montana under current conditions... Then I read where you aborted that mission! I actually admire that even more! Being tough and forcing things beyond any reasonable comfort zones is necessary sometimes, and it does speak to character at some level...

Making smart choices when things just aren't right, however, is not something everyone has the wisdom to do... There are a couple of instances in my own archives, for example, that I'd rather not have to explain! Anyway, safely avoiding unnecessary exposure to the harm that can be lurking in the fog of fatigue and the distractions of discomfort can make altering course and plans entirely the right thing to do... Congrats on knowing when to say NO MAS!

DDT

All,

I'm really looking forward to taking the easy way out of dealing with this heat! I don't want to live anywhere... I want to live everywhere! So, for the next couple of weeks, I'll be living in North Carolina!!! After that... hmmmm...? Yeah, you know I love it... don't you...?

Bruce,
While I'm sure you're aware of this already, the heat in Southern Mississippi is sweltering and not conducive to enjoyable riding right now.   Got in about 120-140 miles yesterday morning but by the time I got home was pretty much soaked in sweat just rolling into the garage to park the fat lady.

But know this, you're welcome anytime, regardless of the weather.   If you happen to show up sometime, we'll do something even if it ain't right.  Wink

Have grill, will cook.  I can burn bacon with the best of them.   Grin

Blue Ridge Parkway = God's Air Conditioner  cooldude ...

Me and Ross are in Deadwood, headed to Nebraska. It is going to be
very hot today. Last night our motorcycles (and everything else in Deadwood)
were cleaned and sandblasted by a short hail storm...

Can't help but be happy I came, though...

Ron,

Thanks for the open-ended invitation! Not sure if I ever mentioned it or not, but I'd actually looked online at the possibility of a short-term apartment rental in Hattiesburg last winter/early spring.  No particular reason, just that I do have several good friends in that area, the weather is usually on the mild side during the cool/cold months... and the fact I've never lived in Mississippi before... Naturally, its proximity to Montgomery, AL, was also a draw.

Alas, no vacancies at the time of what I would need, so nothing came of it... Yeah, I could have added my name to several waiting lists, but... no thanks! I still may drop by one of these days... you just never know. I do, however, seriously doubt it would ever be during the hot time of year!!!

DDT

Mike,

Yeah, I do like the west, too, and I'm always glad every time I venture out there just as y'all are. Appears you and Ross are having quite a time. I see you've hooked up with Punisher, as well. A truly great travel partner, so I'm sure the three of you are enjoying the scenery and weather. I agree the plains will likely be brutal so good luck with the return home!

I am staying put for a couple of weeks... traveling only in my mind! That's not to say I haven't found any adventure. I've been working on some of my culinary shortcomings, and I have impressed myself with some of my efforts, too! I may share a couple of those triumphs in future posts...

Before I retired, had to get in the rides on the weekends, not matter what the weather did.  Then hit the magic "stop working age".  Now take a look at the weather, if it's going to be nice out the door I go.  Even during our winters, there is always a good day for a couple hour ride.

Wednesday, I put on 240 enjoyable mile ride. Got back before the "bang we got summer" temps hit.

Now, that I am pass the 3/4 of a century mark, I tend to do day rides.  Longer ones are 200 to 400 miles in length.  Depending on the "weather".   Do try to do a least 100 miles when go out.

On my way home I got my butt whooped by 102F and humid 2 days running. 3rd day was was so much better at 95F  Grin

Made for short days - about 500 miles - and ov er 100fl oz of liquid intake. My cooler jug was great.

Fill with ice in the morning and top off with water. Still had ice in it at the end of riding. And that's with it in the saddlebag above the exhaust and in the hot sun. I used it to fill my handlebar mounted water holder at every gas/rest stop.

At each motel stop I also drank 2 https://www.amazon.com/Hydralyte-Effervescent-Electrolyte-go-Rehydration/dp/B01F38WHI6

I don't know if they really helped because I didn't do a control test by not taking them one evening.
