I just have the stock radio with no mods (other than an aftermarket antenna on a supervalk).

The other day riding, I got some intermittent squawks through the speakers when the radio was off.  Like you might hear when first turning on the radio.  It happens when the bars are turned and maybe hitting a small bump.  Not straight and level and small handlebar corretions.

I turned the radio on and no more squawks.

I only use the on-off button, the volume control and the radio up and down channel controls (and have never learned or used any of the other buttons (once everything is set up correctly, which it has been for years).

So I thought it might be the handlebar controller, so I started pushing/working all the buttons, and of course screwed up the radio, and had to pull off and experiment around to get it back working (for some time).

Since it is only happening on (larger not smaller) turns of the handlebars, I'm assuming it's the audio wires and not the controller.  The bike hasn't been wet or washed for some time (just wiped down).

When I find my electronic cleaner spray, I'm going to shoot some into the controller buttons (esp the on off).

It's not a big deal, but I'm wondering if it is some kind of short in the handlebar audio wiring, I shouldn't be worried about blowing a fuse or some other issue that would affect the bike running, should I?

I'd remove the left-hand speaker panel, trace the controller wire harness down to the point it meets its mating plug - and carefully inspect everything in the area.

Is there enough slack in the cable to avoid pinching or pulling when you turn the bars? Any evidence of wire abrasion or cuts? Mice chewing the wires?

There's the same old slack as ever in the stock wires, no visible sign of wear or chew or twist or kink.

It's either in the handlbar wires or the controller on-off switch, I think.

The main question is is about a fuse or electrical issue from an audio wire short.  I'm not planning to go spelunking if it won't stop me on the road.

I'd also look at the radio connectors in the clear plastic boot under the right side cover - take them apart and see if any are corroded or oxidized. While in the area, look at the fuse holder and see which one supplies power to the radio. It may be corroded/intermittent too.

When you hear the squeal, are the bars completely at full lock (hitting the fork stops)?

It's not a squeal, it's more like a shot of radio static.  (like it's trying to turn on, when it's off, but not continuous.  The radio is always set to one clear local channel, but no music, just a static charge shot, or two or three)

No not full lock, any turn up to a third or half and any little bump during the turn helps set it off.

Radio on, it doesn't happen.

I had the same problem and thought it was the handle bar controller I was going to get one off eBay but I traced all the wires cleaned and put electric lube in the connectors don’t know which connectors but it doesn’t do it anymore must of been just rust or dirt in the connectors
