I picked up a '98 Valkyrie Tourer a month or so back.  The previous owner had done a terrible job of hooking up a stereo to the thing.  Had literal bare wire twisted and duct taped together.  Rear speakers are in the lids of the saddle bags.  Holes drilled, speaker inserted, and then 3 inch wood screws punched through the lid tops.....

Anyway.... I pulled the tank to clean up the rats nest of wires, replace connections with properly connected ones etc.  After I re-installed the tank, the bike started up, but started to putter out about 500 feet up the street.  managed to get it back to the garage and pulled the tank to look and see if I missed something.  **NOTE** I did NOT pull the air box the first time out.  While looking under around I noticed that the vacuum line had come disconnected from the T connector to the side running to the back of carb 3.

I pulled the airbox to replace that and while there I noted the other vacuum lines were getting kind of iffy in places, so I replaced all the vacuum lines, as well as the fuel lines (purchased bulk hose in appropriate size ad type from auto parts place).

After getting everything re-installed the bike will turn over, and run for a second or two and then stall out.  Pulled the tank off and checked, the petcock is letting fuel flow when vacuum is applied to the vac line on the petcock.  I've tried applying a bit of vacuum to the petcock line manually to fill the carb bowls, but I get the exact same symptoms.  It's like the bike isn't getting any fuel, and for the life of me I can't figure out WTF I'm missing.

Any suggestions or advice?  I've searched through the board for the past weeks, and the posts have been a tremendous help in figuring out what goes where.  Especially after I just pulled that cursed aircleaner box off without taking pictures of what was hooked up where!

Thanks!

You probably kinked the vent hose at the rear of the tank. Try it with the gas cap open, if it runs right you have verification

Well..... I am a full stop idiot today. All last week really.  I had my kids in town for the last couple of weeks, so didn't get to put my full attention on working on the bike. and boy does it show.

I had hooked the vacuum line for carb 6 to the snuggling bowl dump nipple.  not to the actual vacuum port......  that was the first tube I'd replaced, and I didn't physically remove it from the vacuum port, it pulled loose when I was removing the tank.  I literally woke up from a nap to a mental replay of me removing the vacuum cables from carbs 3&4, getting a freeze frame of the port being on the back side of the carb, and another freeze frame of me having the petcock to carb 6 line hooked up wrong.

On the plus side, I have now replaced all the old rubber that would have ended up causing me problems further on down the road, probably while I was nowhere near the house.

Naps should be included in the shop manuals. “After changing the blinker fluid, take a nice nap and review your progress.”

If it's from the Honda manual, then I have a copy of that I found online.  If it's from a shop manual (Clymer etc) then I don't have one yet.  Hoped to find a digital copy somewhere, just haven't found a valid copy anywhere yet.

Did you reconnect the vacuum line to the petcock?
