Haven't had a puff since January the 6th, 1995.  One of the hardest things I've ever done was quitting that stupid habit.

Jan.15 was my two year mark. Got to admit, there are still certain situations that get me to wanting one.

Sorry for the slight drift here, but I have a question.

Henry, I am interested in your experience with Chantix.  You may know that a percentage of people who have used it have had some pretty disturbing symptoms (psychosis-like).  Anything like this for you?

I'm not Henry, but I quit with the assistance of Chantix as well... IMHO if enough people take ANYTHING, SOMEONE's gonna have a bad experience with it...

For me, it was a miracle... Really... I was a 1.5 - 2 pack a day Camel smoker for the better part of 20 years...

Started on the Chantix... Week one they say don't really try to quit, and you take a 1/2 doze once a day to build it up in your system...

Day 8 had the full dose twice a day... Didn't TRY to quit, but I only wanted 5 cigarettes...

Day 9 I had 3 smokes... They were starting to taste nasty and make me slightly nauseous...

Day 10 I woke up, went outside for my morning smoke... Lit up, got half way through the cigarette, suddenly got sicker than I've ever gotten on any drinking binge in my life, puked my guts out...

Crushed out the cigarette, crushed the pack I had left and tossed 'em both in the trash, and haven't had one yet...

Only bad thing I'll say about Chantix for me. They say to eat something with every pill you take. FOLLOW THIS ADVICE! And eat something substantial with every pill you take. Otherwise, the pills themselves made me kinda nauseous...

One month after quitting, I was working on an oil rig off the coast of Africa... I needed some space to stage the computers I was installing. The only space they had for me was the smoker's lounge...

I'd been quit one month, and was surrounded by an entire rig's worth of heavy smokers, and I didn't have one. I really didn't even WANT one.

(I was still taking the Chantix at that point.)

Anyway, sorry to get long winded, but it's something I feel pretty strongly about. No, it won't work for everyone, no it's not for everyone, but it worked WONDERS for me...

Thanks Serk, I appreciate the information.  Your story is very similar to the few I have talked to.  None of them had anything like the symptoms some have reported.  Every one of them said it was a miracle drug for them.

So at no time did you hear voices or see things in the corner of the room, or anything like that?  Not trying to be a smart ass, but these are the type of symptoms reported by some.... and as you reported, you have to build this stuff up in your system over time, so if you do get such symptoms it may take some time after quitting to get rid of them.

If I could get away from my extremely high stress job for two weeks, I'd just use the patch (again); made it for a year in '90.  But I cannot get away for more than a weekend...so I have been considering the Chantix.

Jess from VA,
I used Chantix to quit smoking, and I had no problems. My wife also used the Chantix, and she had some pretty wild dreams at night. However, they did work for her too. She's been quit since Nov. of 2007. As for the high stress job, I work for the Post Office as a Carrier, and never went "postal" on anyone. What ever you decide, good luck.

Thanks for the feedback Mike.  Wild dreams are OK (psychotic symptoms while awake not so good).  When I used the strongest 24hr nicotine patch, I found out it was a mistake to swap it out at or near bedtime: I had disturbing dreams, and one unforgettable, living-color, nearly wet dream that was ruined when the alarm went off at O'dark thirty (man was I pissed).  LOL  After that, I swapped out the patch every morning.

I know something about the postal carrier business and it's management style, and the reason so many 'postal' incidents have occurred.  I also work for the Fed, with similar management, and am at this time strongly considering an early retirement which will cut my throat financially, but may save what is left of my sanity.  (no joke)

Two years and three months for me and I used Chantix also. Serk was right on about eating with every pill. I got nauseated if I didn't. I did have some pretty wild dreams but I just dealt with them.

No, I had nothing like that happen, and I did a lotta international travel while on the Chantix, so lots of jet lag, if anything woulda made that kinda stuff happen to me, jet lag woulda done it, and nothing...

I had some interesting dreams, but the dreams/nightmares were FAR worse and more intense on previous quit attempts with both patches (At night...) and Zyban (Welbutrin)...

Another bonus I hadn't thought of until after I quit... I can ride a lot further than I used to be able to, since I don't hafta stop every 30 minutes for a smoke! (Or pray for a red light so I could light one up at the light...) (And yeah, I know you can install an electric cigarette lighter on your bike and light up at any time... I refused to do that, because then I'd never quit if I'd done it... Wink )

Thanks again Serk.  Yeah, no lighter either; I am an old hand at getting lit at a 10 second red light, and have been known to come to a dead stop in the middle of the road, so long as no cars are coming.

It's time.

I started smoking when I was 14. I was smoking almost 3 packs a day when I quit at age 28 and that was 25 years ago.  I used Nicorettes because that was all that was available in 1984.  Best thing I could ever have done!

Mike, you will still have feeling that a Cig. would taste good for quite a while.  Embarrassed I have a friend that quit 30 years ago a still has those thoughts once in a while. I quit about 10 years ago, about 20 years too late, with the help of Nicorettes and the fact that I could not get a  breath. Cry Now with COPD I don`t do the things that I need / like to do. I hope that all that are trying to dump cig.`s will stay tough and get `er  done.  Wink

jess from va,
i did not have any "psychosis-like" symptoms, but i did have a dream that my german shepard would talk to me (like a buddy).  i smoked regular for the first week then slowly just smoked less. i realized that  whatever it is that you get from a cigarette, i no longer got it , so then i thought why smoke at all and just quit.

Yup... That's the whole idea with Chantix... It binds to the nicotine receptors in your brain and blocks the real nicotine from getting in... So when you smoke while on it, the nicotine can't get in and make you feel good, but your body still reacts to all the negatives, and without all the nicotine offsetting the negatives, your body starts rebelling against you inhaling all that crud, and... Well... Ya' quit...

That's the theory at least...  cooldude

Started stealing butts from my mom at age 9. (1951) Took me 10 years of trying, but finally kicked it for good in 1989. The one thing I couldn't say when they diagnosed me with lung cancer was "Why me?" Been clear for 2+ years, no chemo, no radiation. I must be the luckiest person alive.
