I just had to do the every six month maintenance on my Dakota Alert Devices. Living in a small town which is pretty rural in my area, I like to be able to have some warnings for visitors.
Once upon a time I used a "motion" sensor to do that but this device was set off easily by deer and other small animals. So I shifted to a different device/system.
Its made by Dakota Alert (see link at end) a small family run business that has roots deep in the South Dakota prairie.
They also have small hand held "transceivers" as well as base stations so you can not only keep an "ear" on things but communicate with a base if needed.
Their webpage says that it will only detect "vehicles" but I routinely test mine with a rake or shovel which means that any metallic device will set it off (like wheelbarrow).
The picture below is of the area being monitored. Note there is no evidence of the monitoring device.

I replaced the small antennas provided with the units with a "homemade" "J-Pole" antenna to ensure that the range of the device would not only reach the base station (maybe 200 feet away) but also the small hand-held device I also use.
