Here he comes......

Ready to make a 90degree right hand turn, not as easy as you may think......

This load was 210 feet long, 14 feet tall and 14 feet wide. It weighed 348,000lbs!!

Multiple jeeps make the turns somewhat easier, but it was still a huge job just turning right.....

This thing is a large electric motor, came from Special Metals in the east end of Huntington, we escorted and blocked traffic for 10 miles all the way to the KY line. What made this unusual is we took it right thru 3 cities instead on the Interstate........

Finally got the tractor around the turn...

Easy does it....

Rear steering makes the turns a little easier too....

600 horse Cat pusher motor under that cover!!!

There he goes, off to KY about .5 miles away. We took him across the bridge and handed him off to KYSP......

I have.  They use those to bring the Gas Turbine Engines and Reductions gears into shipyards.  Major undertaking requiring multiple units for traffic control.

Fun part is, it was going to Cleveland, OH to be refurbished. So, we get to do it all over again in about a month, in reverse.

Wow.....  I drove a 40' Flatbed down to Cleveland or Cinci many years ago and that was interesting in town with traffic.

That poor SOB in the back pusher is out there in the elements.  I would have thought there might be some kind of tent or something around him.  Brrrrr......

Doesn't that rear unit get locked in the straight position and not need a human on normal highway runs, just in town?

Yep, when on straight roads it is all locked down. The have to stop and unpin the jeeps when prepairing for turns.this thing also allows the center to tower, rather, rise in the middle for tracks and small hills. Really a very interesting operation to watch.

All the bridges on the route are surveyed before the permit is issued. The State Permit Office plans the route for the load and to deviate from that route is a citeable offense. The Permit Office tells the company how long the wheel base has to be for the load to be spread out enough not to damage the road or any bridges on the route. A bridge in questionable condition on I-64 is the reason we had to take him through town. On the route we took him on there were two bridges where we had to block all other traffic so he could cross at 15mph, no gear changes and no other traffic on the bridge with him.

The company I work for will also send out bridge inspectors/engineers to escort these types of loads to monitor the bridge and inspect it for damage afterwards.  Not sure if there were bridge inspectors following this load, though.

No, inspectors were not following, WVDOH bridge inspectors checked the bridges it would cross before it's permitted route was decided on.

Twenty five years ago, I was the Traffic Manager for a structural steel company.  We had a job in downtown Chicago that had a trestle, 240'-0" long, that went from one building, across the loop to another.  It was shipped in one piece from Grand Rapids, MI.

That was quite the chore, and we didn't have the rear steerer at that time.  We did have additional fifth wheels at the rear and mid-point to help maneuver around corners.

Why were all them 'jeeps' and trailers needed for that 'small' of package? Is it because of the weight of the object?

Yes, it weighed 348,000 lbs.  It needed the 210' axle spread to spread the load far enough that it didn't damage the road, the jeeps are so the thing can get around the turns.

Is the pusher motor used only when making those turns?

The pusher is only cut in when needed such as in the mountains or in the curves. Throttle is controlled by the front driver and not by the rear steer operator.
