Picked up a 40 amp alternator from DB Electric recently. It does not appear to have a turn on speed until about 1200 rpms and registers 39 amps at 2400 rpms, and 40 amps at 2500.   I believe the Valkyrie manuel states the OEM turn on is between 800 - 1000 rpms.  I'm not seeing any of this as an issue since I'm not running anything other than the standard lighting although wanted know if anyone saw it differently.

Thanks

I have an after market high output (LActrical, I think) alternator in Ruby that doesn't kick on until around 1200 or so.  It does reach 14.4 when charging.  No issues have arisen from it.  I try not to let the bike idle for long periods of time.

With the high rpm alternator, you will have a problem with the battery dieing if stuck in traffic and the fans turn on.  You will need to keep the rpm up when standing still.  I learned this the hard way.

Which, for me, begs the question: how does the alternator know what rpm the engine is turning. Does the control circuit inside actually measure the cycles of the stator, with a minimal current through the rotor?

My alternator will start to charge at 1200 rpm’s, once it’s charging it will still charge at 1000.
