Hello all. I'm mid trip to Valhalla, and have developed a rear bearing problem. Got some pretty audible clicking, spoke with Attic Rat and it looks like it's bad.
They're new, installed last week.

Anyway, I'm holed up in Sturgis, Michigan. Right over the Indiana line. I've texted Mark Doenges and waiting on a reply.

Reaching out to see what's available.

I'll start looking for bearings tomorrow am.

Thanks

In my case, the old bearing had a number on it. A local bearing house easily sold me
a replacement.

Baldo, you're in my hometown but I left there many years ago. I don't know of a bearing house in the area. The only motorcycle dealer in town is a Harley place West of town on US 12. Maybe they could direct you to a supplier. If it comes to needing a Honda dealer, the closest one is about 30 miles South in Kendallville, IN. It's the only Honda Powerhouse dealer in Indiana.
Good luck & maybe Mark will get back to you.

Bob, is it a single row bearing or did you convert to double?  I believe I have a cut down spacer if you want to do the double row mod (I highly recommend you do), but I'm on the other side of the state in Troy.  My number is two four eight -729-1169.  I'll have to check my parts stash to see if I have the bearings on hand.

Well, here's the scoop. I've located a couple of bearings in Kendallville. I'm going to pull the wheel and bring it in my snappy new rental, a Chevy Spark, and have them install them. Easy peasey....

What could possibly go wrong?

Thank you to all the replies, it's good to know there's always help available here on this forum.

I'll let you know how it works out.

I drove up to Howe IN with my trailer and picked up Bob and his bike. Brought them both back to my house and we both disassembled the rear wheel and replaced both bearings. Didn't find a obvious cause but put two new Honda bearings in. He left my place around 545 to go back to the hotel in Howe. I justed talked to him and he made it back to the hotel.

On another note. Although we don't see eye to eye on politics and have had a few brush-ups on the board I can put that aside to come to the aid of a fellow VRCC brother in need.

Ok, update....

I 'texted' Mark yesterday to see if he'd be available to help me out. I say texted, unknowingly, what I did was texted to his email. I never had his phone number....I wish I had a buck for every time I checked for a reply.....(&*^&^%^*(&

Mark drove an hour and a half to grab my balky Valk. I was having a weird click coming for the rear wheel. We got to his place and put it up on the lift. Took the wheel off, and the right wheel bearing just fell out onto the floor, along with the spacer. "That's not good", I thought to myself.

I had found a local Honda dealer that had two OEM bearings (double wide bearing mod), so we picked them up on the way to Mark's place. Big shoutout to Talon at Kendallsville Honda. Treated me well, very helpful. They're mighty proud of those bearings, let me tell ya.

Long story short, the aftermarket bearings that I had installed last week were fine, it was the loose bearing that allowed that center spacer to rattle a bit. The new OEM was also loose, I was able to plunge it up and down in the wheel. We ended up putting one layer of electrical tape around the bearing and installed it as normal. Nice 'n tight. No rattles at all on the way back to the hotel.

Now to the pretty part. As Mark said, we've had our differences in the past, some of them pretty harsh. I called him, knowing that he would have no problem putting that aside to help someone in need. He didn't let me down. Having said that, I was starting to have different thoughts when I didn't hear from him in a timely fashion. See disclaimer above.

Mark is a hell of a guy, I don't care what everyone says about him. He helped me out when I really needed it. My hat is off to you, Mark.

Now if he just hadn't tried to get me to take that nasty blue rag off his flagpole...

And this is the really weird part.

I stopped at a restaurant tonight when I got back to town. I actually passed it, then changed my mind and went back.

This guy walked in and sat a few seats down from me at the bar, and commented on the Patriots sticker I have on one of the saddlebags. We have a few words, and I notice he's got THE ACCENT. A fellow New Englander!.

We're talking and talking, turns out he's a retired aircraft mechanic from UPS. Turns out we know about a dozen of the same people. Turns out that he went to A&P school with my lead!

And here's the kicker. He was on his way home from Billings, Montana where he had just dropped off his bike to use on a trip next month. He's going home with an empty trailer!!!

So, I hadn't mentioned this before, but I'm also having clutch issues. The consensus is that I have a rivet plate acting badly and need a replacement. I was (like a fool) considering continuing on my trip to BC and Seattle, because it's been useable.....Bob of Attic Rat fame pretty much told me I was crazy (not really, but I could hear it in his voice).

So, I'm going to take my new friend's offer to throw my bike onto this empty trailer and bring her home. He lives about 40 miles away from me on the Cape.

Now that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I should go play the lottery.

For one reason or another some things are just not meant to be and this trip showed that an *adversary* on one point is not an adversary on all points, there can be common ground and friendship. Also maybe this little detail of the bearing and clutch issue will keep you out of a harmful event waiting around the corner somewhere. As for finding someone like your new friend with so much in common and an empty trailer to get you safely back home, we’ll that says it all pretty much.

Hope you have a safe journey homewards, get your bike squared away and make other trips. I think you did pretty good on this *trip*.

Glad you got the bearing issue taken care of, here's another suggestion to pass on regarding a loose fitting bearing. Use and empty beer or soda can, cut a strip from the can the width of the bearing housing and set it in place almost all the way into the boss. Then press the new bearing in, it will push the beer can strip in with it. I've seen bikes go for years without problems, that filler works until the next bearing replacement.

There's a product made for this kind of problem.  Loctite 680 Retaining Compound.  I was directed to it by somebody on the net, after I related I had my wheels powder coated.  The hammer mechanic (or otherwise incompetent) got the bearing seats full of powder - as well as all the threaded holes and the seats for the thrust cushions - in spite of my admonishment not to do that - and he should have known it anyway.  He's out of business now so he can't F up any other biker's wheels.
Anyhow, I haven't had to reseat the bearings yet; not getting the huge miles I used to.

Mcmaster-Carr says "Even on oily surfaces, these retaining compounds keep their hold. Use them to fill gaps up to 0.015" to secure worn cylindrical metal parts such as shafts, bearings, and press-fit assemblies. These retaining compounds begin to harden once coated surfaces are pressed together, blocking exposure to air."

And another trick from my life as a marine mechanic is to use a spring loaded center punch on the bearing outer bore and center punch all around  the bore. It raises the material and makes the bore diameter smaller. works good.
