I'm kinda surprised there has been no mention of it.

This will be the first we have been thru and we're buttoning things up. We're probably going to stay and ride it out. I'm thinking it'll be a bumpy ride. Supposed to have about 120 mph winds for quite some time since its moving so slowly. It figures. We just sold in NYS and finished re-doing the shack down here. We're filling up the van with as much stuff as will fit in it in case we need a quick get-away. Such is life.

Plan on power outage (if you're on a well - stock up on water), assuming you won't get flooded, don't open fridge / freezer anymore than absolutely necessary. Charge up cell phones / laptops. Make communication plans with friends / relatives not in the area. Ideally, you have propane / natural gas you can cook on (yes, you can light a gas cooktop without electricity - use a match/etc.), or maybe a charcoal grill. DO NOT USE CHARCOAL INSIDE THE HOUSE. Don't mess around with flooding  - "Turn around, don't drown".

After the storm - if you have significant storm damage, contact insurance agent / company (most will have a number for you and others in your area). Hope you have had time to create a home inventory.

You may know all this already - just providing this as an initial guide. Good luck.

If you have a top loading clothes washing machine fill it with ice. It'll self drain and you can store stuff in the ice to keep it cold.

If you leave and wanna make sure your freezer's contents are safe when you get back, put a cup of water in the freezer, once it's frozen, put a penny on top of the ice.

When you return if the penny's still on top good to go, if the penny's at the bottom of the cup then power was out long enough to defrost  your freezer...

Oh, and be safe.

Shooting at the hurricane is ineffective.

Everyone should have photos/video of the interior of their home.

We're going to ride this one out in the Naples area. It appears that we will miss the brunt of it as it's predicted to pass us to the west. We've been here since 77 and have been through a few of these.
Pray for the folks in Tampa area.

Another trick;  cram as many containers of water in your freezers as will fit. (before the power loss)

All that ice will help a lot.

In hot weather, whenever a storm may knock out my power, I put the AC down to 60.  It may not be politically correct, but the longer it takes for my house to get to 90* the better.

Here in Western NC it's going to be a rain event. Generator and gas for it already prepared. Just have to hope the creek doesn't come up too high.

Well, I'm buttoned up as much as I can be right now. Spent the day doing awnings and shutters for others.
Thx for the suggestions.
OH, we're in Clearwater. So, if we survive, I might have a report on Friday. There are quite a few conflicting forecasts, but, they are saying it could be the worst this area has had.

It's only supposed to be dropping from cat 3 to cat 2 before going ashore right about your location. The wind field before will be the biggest concern (except for possible flooding from all the rain (and there will be LOTS of rain (think FEET of rain))).

Im 72 and live in the Houston Tx area. I am approx 50 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico.   I have been through several major Hurricanes.  If you are in the storms path My recommendation...... load up things you cant live without and leave the area.   If you wait till your home starts flooding to try to leave it will probably be too late to leave due to widespread flooding and blown over trees in the roads

Right  now they are predicting 15" rain, wind from 60 to 120. We are just far enough inland where surge shouldn't be an issue. We're not going anywhere, or, far. Friends have offered. The roads out of town are nutz, so I'm not going.
Its looks as if we'll get the direct hit. If we survive you'll know Friday.

Praying for all you in the path. Been there, I know all the thought processes. Hotels will fill up fast. Now is the time to evacuate if you think you are going to.

We don’t have a big house but we have one spare room and I can fit one more Valkyrie in my family room. We’re in the panhandle a little east of Pensacola.  Call if you need a place to hide out.

A friend from back north offering his place at the Zepher Hills airport which should almost be out the path.
Just got finished fixing 3 generators for folks that used regular fuel in them and just shut them off and put them away. The carburetors were a mess, ethanol raises hell with them if left to sit. I went thru 2.5 cans of spray Deep-Creep.  I told them how to put them away when finished, but, I doubt they'll do it.

I work for the city of Sarasota, yes they are in our area for sure, my wife and sister with dogs are in NC at our home in Sylva. I moved my 90 year old father and I out east of Parrish to my sisters newer built home and the shutters are up. I have my Honda Gen and the winds are strong and this is far away at this point!

Not too bad in the Naples area. Only about 4.5 " of rain so far. It's due west of us and thankfully off shore enough that our gusts are only in the 60 mph range. The backside of the storm is starting to come around. All in all not bad here. Pray for the folks to the north as it's now at 155 mph and predicted to make landfall north of Ft. Myers.

Not trying to minimize the seriousness of the situation.

But this is too funny not to share:

Also I really shouldn't have to say this but at Willow's request I will remind everyone that the Babylon Bee is SATIRE and not necessarily the truth.

For those of you in the path of Ian take care, you're in our prayers and let us know how you're doing when you can.

It only works if everyone is vaccinated.  And you must get a booster every week or you are SOL.

Tornados touched in the west Delray, west Boca Raton area of Florida.  About a mile from my Dad's condo.

He's staying put and says he's not worried, but that doesn't mean that I"M not worried.  I told him to not sit at his dining room table as there's a very large window next to the table and it is NOT hurricane rated.  His fridge is full and he's got plenty of T.P.

Been calling every few hours just to check in.

If anyone cares, the actual reasoning was that since hurricanes could cause lots of people to be crammed in close proximity to each other in shelters and the like, being vaccinated ahead of time would be a prudent thing to do...

Ugh, hate it when ya'll make me defend him, but he actually had a point in this case...

Ya'll remember Katrina and the Superdome in New Orleans, for instance?

Edit to add - The video clip currently circulating of Biden encouraging folks in hurricane prone areas to get vaccinated is from August 10th, 2021, it's not in direct relation to the current hurricane hitting Florida at all, but was a generalized statement before last year's hurricane season kicked into effect.

JoAnn left me all alone, so, I'm sitting here on the rear patio drinking beer watching the hurricane go about its business. Peaceful. The rain and 40-50 mph wind should start to drop around midnight.

Speaking of hurricanes:  I wonder if the pilots of those hurricane hunter planes have trouble sitting comfortably due to the size and metallic composition of their testicles.

One pilot said this was the worst one he has flown through.
