99 Valkyrie Trike was running great during an hour ride I was taking, about 2 miles from my house
the power started to lessen, almost like it was running out of gas, when down shifting and going up any hills it was struggling, not sure if I didn't fully shift, but jumped out of gear once, shifted again and heard a loud noise in the Trike rear I think, not sure if it wasn't fully in the next gear, thought I noticed a slight burning smell and the radiator fan came on, the engine was working hard, getting slower and slower; near my house power was fading fast, turned on to my lawn and it just stopped dead wouldn't start.

I waited 20 minutes and tried starting it, started right up, shifted fine rode it into my garage. I don't have mechanical skills, any ideas I could share with my mechanic

Over the next couple days starts and shifts as it should, I drive it up and down the street and it seems normal.

The big problem is since the problem has "stopped", I'm sure it will happen again as there was a lot going on for 15 minutes and I don't trust it anymore to go anywhere, but how can I get something fixed when the problem has temporarily disappeared.

Thanks
Frank

Next ride put the key in the gas cap. You do have an extra key? Starts to stumble again release the gas cap. If it straightens right up your vent line might be plugged or kinked. RIDE SAFE.

Mine did similar years ago when my petcock was dying. If you pull the fuel and vacuum lines and attach tubing to both outlets you can vacuum test the petcock. Pull vacuum in the off position- no gas should flow. Turn to on and reserve with no vacuum-no gas should flow. With a small amount of vacuum lots of fuel should flow in reserve and on. Bet it doesn’t flow too good with those symptoms.

Thank you both for your response and suggestions!

I forgot to add some additional info and maybe this would help; when it stopped and just died.

1) When I tried to start it, wouldn't turn over

2) I could not get the trike to go into any gear, nor move it even with the clutch in.

I'm going try short rides within a couple miles of the house, will bring spare key in gas cap, and see if it acts up.

With this new info, and what you said previously about a burning smell, I’d check the differential for gear oil. It wouldn’t be the first time that a mechanic forgot to fill it after servicing.
