Fat Bear Week is an annual tradition at Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve where internet users watch the live cams of the bears at the park and vote for their favorite fat bear.

Here’s more information on what it is and how you can live stream the action.

What is Fat Bear Week?

Fat Bear Week is a celebration of Katmai National Park’s brown bears.

Pictures of the bears are matched up against each other in a March Madness-style competition. Online voters can choose which bear will be crowned the winner of Fat Bear Week.

Katmai National Park has live streamed their wildlife since 2012 and has placed cameras by Brooks River and Falls to showcase their bears while they forage for food.

That's kinda neat, but I have a special request. I want to watch the person & ceremony when they go out and crown that winning bear. Grin

I understand they had a similar contest in D.C., something about Politician Dumbass Week. The whole thing was canceled due to so many ties for first place.  Roll Eyes

I was watching the feed a few days back when a young bear got his butt kicked trying to steal a fish from a sow with cubs. I thought for sure he was a goner after hanging over the falls with the sow nearly ripping his snout off. But he seemed to come thru ok.

msb prefers to vote in the other contest of voting for best bear fornicators.  Grin

Many years ago, I and my two cousins..brothers, a year older and younger than myself used to get fussed at by my aunt...their mom. As a kid I'd spend sumers with them on the farm, as we three young innocents  Roll Eyes got older our responsibilities became more involved, especially in the field and the milking parlor. From time to time, the mating ritual of various livestock took place and was difficult to overlook since it could happen anywhere and often interrupted our barnyard work. Their mom would fuss at us for watching, I guess fearful it would plant ideas in our heads...something already well entrenched since we were teenagers by then. Some of her reasoning was rather humorous when I look back on it but none of us wanted to get caught if it looked like we were gawking at it...hardly our preferred pasttime. Sometimes the animals were simply in the way and we got fussed at for interupting, a losing battle with my dear aunt.  Grin

As for we three guys growing up and spending many hours together, especially during the summer months, we had some very "interesting" adventures over the years. Dad was school superintendent & farmed me out in summer to help out other family members on their farms. Personally I think it was to keep me out of trouble in town...little did he know.  Wink

Many years ago when my kids were about 7 and 12 we went on vacation from AK to California. We took the kids to Disneyland and San Diego. At the zoo my wife was just mesmerized watching this huge Gallopagos Tortoise trying to get lucky with a female turtle. He would spend all this time and effort climbing up on top, only to have her take a couple steps out from him after he finally got in position. I think my wife would have stayed there all day watching if the kids hadn’t have kept bitching about wanting to go see other animals.

(In hindsight I think she was planning strategies for the future)
