So being stuck living out here on the left coast, we are uncomfortably close to California. A lot of California people tend to move up here to escape the high taxation and tyranny of that terrible state. The problem is they bring their California politics with them and in the 50 odd years I have been here since July 1970, they have turned WA or at least Western WA into a version of California but with crap weather most of the year. But don't get me started. I'd love to leave here but I'm trapped by circumstances of family. My wife won't move away from our daughter, and I get that... anyway, we get a lot of older California vehicles up here.

There is an up side to that. They usually have not a speck of rust on them. My 2001 Ford F-250 4X4 7.3 International Harvester Powerstroke diesel pickup which I bought in 2012 and restored to pristine condition is an example. It is totally rust free. I learned it came from Oceanside CA from an old registration in the glove box. I was working on the glow plugs and they are California specific. It's a super clean truck, now in the Biden economy, worth more than I paid for it in 2012.

Now the Valkyrie as it turns out is also... sadly is a California transplant. I have the CAV/EVAP system along with the PAIR smog set up. As I understand it, the 49 state bikes only have the PAIR system.

I'm for removing all the smog stuff. I can handle the PAIR system delete even though the shiny smog kit that used to be available from Redeye is no longer being sold. Lots of options on doing that. I may use 14mm freeze plugs or perhaps turn some nice brass or aluminum plugs with o-ring groves on my lathe. I can make my own plates for the bottom ports.

I can also remove the CAV and PURGE valves. And here is my question. If I remove the evap system, I assume I'll have to re-jet. I believe the air fuel mixture will be on the rich side as the air/fuel vapor coming from the charcoal canister via the CAV/EVAP valves will no longer be fed into the intake side of the carbs via the CAV/PURGE system.

Has anyone done this delete on a California model? If so, did you switch to 49 state carbs? Or is there any difference in the 49 state vs California carbs aside from possibly some vent port caps and maybe jets? Or... can the mixture just be turned down to lean it out enough?

I'd really like to get this quagmire of old vacuum driven valves, rotting vacuum hoses and rubber lines and all off the motor. WA stopped it's emissions testing program a few years ago as all the older clunkers were hitting the bone yard and it became too expensive to justify any longer. Thankfully. They never tested motorcycles here anyway. So emissions testing is no longer an issue.

It seems to me, I can cap off the carb vents and if it's running too rich after deleting the emissions, I could re-jet. Or would a less experimental and possibly more fool proof method be to obtain a set of 49 state carbs and switch over?

Any ideas? I want all this plumbing off.

All I did was block off the extra little tubes coming out the side, rebuilt the set and installed on the bike. Sync'd the carbs with a digisynce and runs fine...believe I set the pilots at 2 turns out.

What John said, except I would go 2 1/4 turns from lightly seated on the pilots unless you are at a high altitude. If you are above 6500 feet ASL the manual says to turn the pilots in 1/2 turn from the normal adjustment.

see my posts on how I plugged the heads after pair valve tubes were removed.

calf., carbs have extra vacuum hose connections for the emissions system. other than that all carbs are the same as is the jetting for all models. I/S carbs have different slide springs which will increase mpg.

removing any of the emissions systems does not required re-jetting the carbs.

The PAIRS system only works when going off throttle.
