See if I understand this.

You took the fairng off.
You did something in the fairing.
You put the fairing back on an now it no work.
Is this correct?

If so, I'd say you didn't get a connector seated properly.....

It sounds to me like he has removed the farring completely and wants to install standard type guages, I would consider pinwal parts for a cable drive and speedo.

The entire wiring harness would have to be changed to accomodate a removal of your fairing and replacement of the Standard/Tourer gauges, odometer, warning lamps, headlight, and the wiring for the radio speakers.

IMHO
My advise is to keep an I/S as it should be, but it is your bike, so take any advice for what it's worth.

Yip Challenger was right in his assumption,, i removed the Fairing well the sudden impact with the Irish roads removed it for me,,, Ouch !!!! the bike is now rebuilt and driving grand, im not going to be able to repair the fairing,, the electrical connector is there for the fairing but what i am trying to do is just fit a single clock (speedometer) all the other electrics are fine like headlights etc
Any help would be appricated

time to consider replacing with Dakota Digital unit.  You already have the electronic speed sensor with the I/S.  Should be an EASY MOD.

There's others here that have done this......

The Interstate speedo is electric, the Standard/Tourer is mechanical.

You can either get an aftermarket electronic speedo or speedo/tach, maybe an aftermarket mechanical drive, or switch the speedo over to the stock Std. model.  Here are the Dakota Digital ones that have been mentioned:  http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=results/Category_ID=560/home_id=-1/mode=cat/cat560.htm

If you decide to use the stock standard model you will need to get a cable, the speedo head and the mounting hardware to fit it to the bike.  Here is the fiche for a '99 Std., it also shows the matching Tachometer - not sure what you would need to do to wire that up but if you check the schematics you can likely figure it out.
http://www.hdlparts.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=148152&category=MOTORCYCLES&make=HONDA&year=1999&fveh=3467

Somebody had a speedo head for sale on the classified board a few days ago not sure if it is still available and whether it is KMH or MPH (suspect MPH likely from an American bike imported into Canada).

The KPH ones may not be available from the States.  If you would rather have one in KPH and want to price them here in Canada to see how it compares to your local price then send me a message and I can check price and availability with a phone call.  I bought one about a year ago and got it in a few days from the Honda warehouse in Canada.
