I'm helping a friend get his 2000 Valkyrie running. It has no spark.
Power is getting to the coils and I can get coils to spark by tapping coil negative to ground.
Battery is 12.6v and engine cranks well.
I'm thinking ignition box or pulse generator. Partzilla shows different P/N's for Goldwing and Valkrie pulse generator, although they look the same. Are they interchangable?

Find a spare spark plug and pull a wire off one of the plugs and attach the spare. Turn the engine over with that spare laying on the block and watch for a spark. If you have spark there and you say the coils are sparking, then I don't understand you saying you have no spark. Might try jumping the battery from the car but not with the car running. Before doing that however, put a meter across the battery posts, hit the starter and watch how low the meter goes. if it goes to or below 10vdc, your battery is no good even if it shows 12.6v. Turning over the engine to start draws too much from an old weak battery, not leaving enough to fire the plugs.

I was just using process of elimination. There is no spark when cranking and tring to start the bike.
With the ignition switch on, if I tap the negative terminal of a coil with a grounded wire the plug sparks. This should eliminate spark plug, plug cap, plug wire, coil, and power to the coil as the problem. Leaving ICM and pulse gererator as possible causes.
New pulse generators for Valkyries are not avalible, yet they are avalible for GL1500 Goldwings.
Will a Goldwing pulse generator work?

I do not know the answer to your question. You could buy a used set. I would start by listing a wanted ad in the classified section on here, and in the Facebook Valkyrie forums. Ask for IGNITION PULSE GENERATOR 30300-MZ0-003. Anyone parting out a Valkyrie  will have them. They run about $110 on eBay and Partszilla.

Like I said in my first response, if the battery is older and weak...even if it shows 12+vdc when checked, when you try to start it there's not enough power left in the battery to fire the plugs AND at the same time turn over the motor. Try jumping with your car battery, just don't have the car motor running. If the bike starts then, the bike battery needs replacing. Just try it before going further.

Thanks for that info John.
It will be a few days until I can get back to the bike. But I will recheck with bikes battery jumped to a car battery. Will also check voltage while cranking.

Just don't do them both on the same try. I'd check the voltage while cranking first, just to see if it drops well below approx. 11vdc. That's about the lowest it can go and still fire...maybe!  Wink  Then if you get a big drop try jumping with a nonrunning car. If it starts, the bike battery is your problem.
