Essential Fuel... Nothing moves without some form of fuel involvement in the process somewhere along the way. Even celestial bodies hurling through the vast nothingness of space each had some form of fuel (heat energy, direct or indirect) and kinetic energy transfer that initiated movement, then gravitational pull and/or inertia in a weightless environment kept the 'balls' rolling. Our miraculous steeds require gasoline (fuel) to produce their energy in concert with inputs from their riders. Even those riders themselves absolutely require nutrition (fuel) in various forms... Not a hard concept to understand and accept... How these rider energy transfers are accomplished can take on an inexhaustible number of forms, but for our purposes here some specific methods are of particular interest: 'The Great Florida Que Quest' is an example. In the early days of the Valks' first appearance in the Sunshine State, one 'motivation' devised to incentivize Valk riders to congregate was to announce a lunch gathering at some BBQ restaurant around the region on a particular day and time. The prospect of an exploratory day ride to some new location combined with a pleasant social event greatly enhanced the taking-on of 'people fuel' by attendees. Even visits to seafood or other types of non-BBQ restaurants back then were still variously called 'Fishy Ques' or other similar fabricated description. In time the 'Que' reference to gatherings was dropped, though, in favor of the more accurate 'RTE' or Ride-To-Eat designation. While the names for those events were modestly altered, the original intent was not. It's still analogous to our mothers tying a pork chop around our neck to induce the family dog to play with us. Crude, but it did prove quite successful. Our girl and her SO regularly participated in those gatherings early-on, as they proved easy to attend for nearly all including those who had otherwise complicated, busy lives with many varied requirements. In time this rider's life became almost completely uncomplicated, however, so interests and habits changed significantly as the opportunity to pursue things only dreamt of before became possible. Most of the people fuel intake for this long-rider following those heady early years became a solitary undertaking, while the exploratory nature of 'riding for fuel' took on an entirely new and astonishing dimension! This theme has not changed in many, many years now, so... I suppose one could speculate that, "It took..." We do still stumble upon occasional opportunities for group human fuel intake sessions! As described in recent posts, I found myself slap-dab in the middle of two spur-of-the-moment meal events in Florida's panhandle with some great friends who also ride Valks... I even enjoyed a couple of Margaritas and a downright tasty Burrito Supremo at the first meal get-together! {Note: Beef & bean burrito fuel intake can produce embarrassing 'exhaust' issues at social functions. Margaritas won't prevent that, but they will relieve feelings of anxiety and guilt.} An escorted ride north from Baker, FL, for fifty miles or so into Alabama by a few of the breakfast gathering attendees including Sweet Cheeks, then just SC and our girl along with her SO, finally just our girl and her rider back in their natural state... The long-delayed plan was simply to glide through southern Georgia into South Carolina, then veer northeastward into North Carolina... Our first destination target towards that end was Statesboro, GA. We didn't make it. In fact, we didn't even make it out of Alabama... close but not quite. Eufaula, AL, sits on the western bank of the Chattahoochee River, which also serves as the state line in that area separating Bama from Jawja. For my personal evening fuel replenishment, I settled for the people 'fuel' of an Italian BMT 'meal' from a nearby Subway. While there, I studied the weather, pondered our next move, and first began to notice a creeping lack of enthusiasm for our contemplated ride... Nowhere else to wander just now, though, with the ‘short tether’ of another round of doctor visits looming in a couple of weeks... Complicating matters were the ever-present rounds of precip forecasted. What to do? Staying the course for now was the eventual outcome of half-hearted deliberations... The following morning, we departed headed for Statesboro again... We didn't make it again...Was I missing something here? Was fate purposefully leading us away from that otherwise OK town deep in 'you all' country? We rode on... Then, I missed a turn, and we went a hundred miles out of the way all totaled, including the lengthy highway detour and yet another missed turn also along that 'modified' route... "Something is definitely going on here," I thought to myself! As the late afternoon shadows lengthened and produced in increasing intensity the 'strobe' effect of rapidly alternating flashes of brilliant sunlight and dark tree shade producing that hypnotic drowsy effect while impairing our vigil for critters and other hazards as we cruised along... thoughts quickly drifted towards another early end to the day's ride. Why not? We approached Vidalia, GA, as our need for bike fuel coincided with the rider's growing limited bladder capacity issue, so... A break and a reevaluation of our status were combined... Statesboro had only been a target of convenience anyway, as it was the place I'd figured to change our course from due east to more northeast. We'd also paused there in years past, so the availability of motels was well known to us. Vidalia was also a smallish town we'd visited on previous occasions, so... as good as any, I'd concluded. We found a motel with a Shoney's restaurant right next door; there was even a short breezeway connecting the two... How nice! Although the weather forecasts were by no means atypical for this time of year, they were also by no means particularly inviting! Continued cool to cold temperatures interspersed with rounds of showers, some even predicted to have the potential for severe weather including tornados. The result of that was the certainty of us finding ourselves periodically hunkered down for a night or three waiting in some motel room for the nasty stuff to pass... I then had an inspiration: Shoot let's just see if we can get another Airbnb and loaf for a few days! We found a house available barely ten miles or so from where we were, so... Coddiewomple-interruptus was set in motion. The eastern Carolinas still haven't gone anywhere, so we can surely take our time. Besides, delaying gratification has a way of elevating the appeal of ideas and ambitions... sort of like what foreplay does for us, I suppose... All of this has reminded me of an old axiom shared by a late uncle of mine way back when: "Son, if you find women ain't meeting your standards, you need to lower your standards!" I've come to the opinion that that truism can also apply to riding, as well... 'If weather conditions aren't meeting your desires, you need to alter your tolerable weather desirability range!' We'll see... In the meantime, cooking for personal fuel consumption has become the new focus for the next few days... DDT (12)

Interesting read as usual, Bruce. A couple of random observations and comments if I may..... When I first started travelling more frequently and for longer stays to the more Southern states with work a few decades ago, one of many differences (in my world, "different" generally is a positive occurrence, which is why I always enjoyed my travels to the Southern states so much) I noticed when going for countless meals with clients and colleagues is that we would go for "Barbeque" or simply "Q" ("que" as you mention here). Most of the time there was/is no real reference to what is actually being bbq'd, such as in what type of meat...just Barbeque (Q/Que). Different than here in most of Canada where it's always bbq chicken, bbq ribs, bbq steak, etc. Like I said...a random thought/observance...lol When I first joined this forum years ago, I'd see these posts for RTE rides. Thought they were some type of "official" organizational rides at first...took me a bit to clue in...Ride To Eat...Duh! "If weather conditions aren't meeting your desires, you need to alter your tolerable weather desirability range!"I believe you and I have had some discussion on this topic before. As you know from first hand experience, my region here is prone to a fair amount of the wet stuff especially in Spring and late Autumn-early Winter seasons. If one wishes to be a regular rider as opposed to a part time rider in these parts, one learns to at the very least tolerate, if not even enjoy at times (without cold temps and/or wind) riding in the rain. Personally I find myself not minding riding in wet conditions...I even actually enjoy it when conditions otherwise are decent. Heck, I've even got Lisa conditioned to where she can stick out a full day in the saddle bundled up in her raingear! So, maybe applying your late Uncle's logic to your riding in wet conditions may be worth a shot

Bruce,
As always love your thoughts and ramblings, you're living the dream my friend. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.
'If weather conditions aren't meeting your desires, you need to alter your tolerable weather desirability range!' That is an interesting perspective and true way of looking at riding. I have ridden my Valk in most everything (not always by choice) from rain, snow, hail, a hurricane, tornados, dust storms, and a few other not so desirable conditions and my philosophy was, I need to deal with it. As you know Petra started riding about 13 years ago and in the beginning the weather, wind and temp had to be just right for her to swing a leg over the bike. Her thoughts of not meeting her desires was "Nope, not, no way" Time went on and her perspective of what is tolerable riding conditions subsequently changed. First 70* and sunny, no wind, then it dropped to 60* and cloudy, 50's Ok we'll try it, and nowadays, if the roads are free of snow and ice and its in the 35-40* range she's itching to get out and ride. As for rain and wind, she's still not a big fan of it but deals with it. So your desirability range I guess changes with time, distance and DESIRE.
Look forward to your next adventure of the road and the Bruce Chronicles. Ride on my friend and we'll see you down the road.

Ron,
As you no doubt suspected... I am inclined to agree! In fact, I find myself agreeing with you on quite a few things!!! Looking forward to the Fling, my friend... I do hope we make it...
DDT (12)
Paul,
Thanks! When I got your text the other day, I was hopeful you might happen to be in the hood... Alas, no.
DDT (12)
Mike,
Q, Que, BBQ, Bar B Que, Barbeque, it's just a southern thang... An alleged quote of old Andy Jackson's might help in understanding this, "I never trusted a man who couldn't spell a word at least seven different ways..."
As for your observation on the differences between down here in the Holy Land and up yonder in the hinterland, I've noticed that, too! Down here it's more of a noun describing meat prepared a certain way. Up there, it seems to be more of a verb describing the actual cooking of something on an outdoor grill.
As for your observations on adjusting to conditions if one wants to ride extensively... Well, I do agree completely. Heck, I just like to poo-poo unpleasantness while highlighting my own inherent wimpiness... BTW, my hat is off in salute to Lisa! You definitely landed a keeper there!!!
DDT (12)
Evan,
My friend, I always appreciate your comments and compliments! Thanks for those... Yeah, you do appear to be a quick study in the art of the longcut, and unless I miss my guess, you'd also be a natural at the coddiewomple thing...
Too bad about the GOTF, but as you well know, all things come and go eventually. That annual event, originally billed as the 'Five Bs', ran for twenty years, thereby outlasting all but a precious few gatherings of any sort! It also produced the best BBQ brisket I've ever had!!! Yep, knowing when to hunker down is an essential skill for survival on the road!!!
DDT (12)
Bill,
Dang, dude! Thanky, thanky, thanky!!! Feedback like that is a most powerful inducement to do some more... I'm thinking at the moment I just might...
DDT (12)
Yuri & Petra,
Great story about her evolution as a rider... I think most, if not all, of us have followed a similar path. She is amazing, though, and sharing wind with you and her has been a highlight of some of my rides over the years... In fact, I sure hope to do some more of that!!!
My weather tolerance range is still towards the wimpy end of the scale, but the needle has definitely moved over the years! Who knows, in a few more decades I just may be able to hang with you and Petra!!! In the meantime, I'm still blundering around willy-nilly hither and yon... doing what I do with our girl... best danged girlfriend I ever had!!!!!!!!!
DDT (12)
Ron,
Hmmm...
DDT (12)
Seth,
Probably not... Not a bad idea really, but aside from the space it would take on our girl, restaurants just do such a better job of food (people fuel) preparation than I ever could. Plus... there is that lazy streak I have... I reckon I'm just gonna stick with lean, light, and nimble for now...
DDT (12)
Rob,
Thanks, my friend! I appreciate ya!!!

Once, out on a group ride, I noticed a fellow rider removing what looked to be a bunch (double fist full) of aluminum foil from his cobra pipes. I went over to see what was up, and he had been "cooking" what looked like would come if you'd ordered fajitas. Strips of steak, onion and peppers. Looked and smelled good. He seemed to enjoy it. I haven't tried making mobile cuisine. I recall stories from my dad about "cooking" on old flat head automobile engines while making long trips.

Bruce, LOL, I just now saw the spelling error in my former comment!……..And corrected it! Dang pelting destroyer!!! Yes! I do understand and I would not want it any other way! As for the getting back out there, after my minor surgery today, I have 2 doctor appointments to attend in the next 2 weeks. After that, there are no health related check-ins for at least 2 months. I believe that my health issues are mostly behind me,…..for a while anyway. Although there is the fact that CB is pushing rather strongly for her own (caged) excursion into a wonderful getaway in late April and my cardiologist told me no motorcycle riding for 6 months (4 of those months now past), this wolf is likely to roll out for a mini coddiewomple sometime in the next 3 months. Maybe we will see each other out there somewhere! Bigwolf
