I have a 2000 Interstate. Last year the alternator rotor shorted out and killed my radio at the same time. I wonder if there is anyone out there who does repair work on these things. I have replaced the main radio diode, all fuses are good, and I have checked for power coming in to it. I even opened up the unit to see if I could see anything burnt. All looks OK. Used radios are ~ $350 on e-bay and new ones are OUTRAGEOUS. Help, I miss my tunes.

Quite a few years ago I worked on things like this.  I would open it up and see if there is a protection diode inside the case near the power supply input.  If there is and it is open or burned you may get by with a very inexpensive fix. If not a new radio might be required.

If you do open it feel free to take a photo and send it to me.  I would be happy to look at it for you.

Hope this helps.

You don't mention where you are located, which would be important if wanting to take it to a shop.

Like 1fastbob said, most likely the diode. What is your level of electronics experiance? I just have my high school classes, and have been doing home electronics for years now. Do you have an electrical meter for testing and know what a diode is and looks like?

I also ride a 2KIS. If anyone can supply the CD interface specs. I would be grateful.

I'm not great with electronics but I think I can find the diode. I do have a meter to check things out. I have a strong background in electrical circuits but weak on electronics. I live in the Houston area. Has anyone tried aftermarket radios on a Valk? Sorry I haven't had any spare time to check anything out yet, life has been very hectic.

Mine died several years ago. Diagrams are available in Shop Talk. Check that all input voltages are there. The dash module also has 12 volts on it if I remember correctly. Mine died due to a bad wire in the harness to the display. One of those sometines it worked and sometimes it did not. I just ran a wire on the outside of the harness and it has never acted up since. The radio has a standing 12 volts on it to keep the clock on time and switched 12 volts to turn it on and off.

I have not been able to find a Radio specific Diagram for the IS.

I have had my radio apart to look for obvious connection problems, but I do not know where the diode is.

Can any one take some photos of the things that I should look for inside the radio.

Go to the Gold Wing board. GL1800riders.com and do a search for radio repair. There's a guy who repairs and upgrades wing radios.
