And the US has promised $100,000,000 for the relief effort (not including the cost of the military and volunteer medical and relief aides). That amounts to roughly 10 MILLION DOLLARS per person. They should be eating lobster and fillet mignon instead of water and beans. Why not just give them 5 million each and call it a day. That would cut our responsibility in half and the new millionaires can take care of themselves. If the US isn't overpaying, there's a mistake somewhere.

Money isn't the problem. The problem is that the country of Haiti is a giant cluster$#%^ and there is no infrastructure to help those that need help.

$100,000,000 divided by 10,000,000 (Rounded up from 9.8 million) = $10 per person

It's all good... I had to sit and work out the numbers multiple times to make VERY sure I was right, NOTHING more embarrassing than correcting someone and having your correction turn out to be wrong!

And, if our govt had given us all the money proposed for the stimulus, we'd all be rich and taxes would be paid to put it back into the govt. Oh well.

in reality, what was the number of people that was effected by the earth quake? take that number then devide it from the dollar amount.
i do believe that we're spending way too much money down there.

YES, the math failed to exclude the 75,000 dead. $10 is way too much for third world people, they could live for 10 months on that kind of money.

• Teams of looters overwhelmed private security guards in the downtown commercial district, carting off refrigerators and washing machines as well as wood and steel from damaged businesses. • Traffickers have long favored Haiti as a transit point for South American drugs Some Haitians keep children as slaves (and you figure what that means) both on the island and in the US. Give them the ten bucks and call it a day. I can throw a rock from my porch and hit a hungry or homeless American.

We have been pumping money into Haiti for many years actually, and of course (like New Orleans) they are in a storm/flooding or earthquake area. How much relief money did New Orleans get say from Haiti.... or how many other countries?? Haiti is a country, and the Capital Port Au Prince area suffered the earthquake, not the entire country. The population estimate for Haiti (the country) is roughly 9 million and not everyone in the country suffered damage of the earthquake. The International Red Cross estimated that about three million people were affected by the quake;[8] Haitian President Rene Preval stated on 27 January that "nearly 170,000" bodies had been counted.[9] The New York Times reported on 28 January that 20,000 commercial buildings and 225,000 residences had collapsed or were severely damaged.[10]

A bit more math...that $100,000,000 divided by 330,000,000 Americans works out to costing us about .30 (30 cents) each.
