Bummer. It's always rough when a "family member" is suffering. Been there, done that....several times.

I hope it's something like that...but there's no sign of any trauma or bites/wounds. A better/worse pic:

Well, good news! (maybe/sorta/mostly)
The Vet's pretty sure it's an infection.
He didn't have any luck piercing it/draining it.
A couple of shots, some powerful antibiotics and anti-inflammatories to stuff down his throat, and we are to bring him back in three days. Then we'll know for sure.
The dog is obviously not feeling well but the wife said he had his typical flat-out fun on the car-ride to and from the vet...and that's a good sign.

Daniel, ya'll put that ball bat up, you don't need to use it on that puppy....... That looks like Bandit did one night when he happened to be in the wrong spot at the right time. Neighbor kid was a discus thrower. He went through his spin and let er rip, in his own backyard mind ya. Just smacked Bandit right about where that bump is above the eye. Being a Chinese Pug and built like a brick sheet house, he yelped, laid down, I thought he was dead, and as I approached, he got up on all 4's, used his front leg to rub the knot and walked back home to his doghouse. Had a 7734 of a time getting him out to take him to the Emergency Vet..... Vet said he has a very hard head, told him I knew that and he gave me some pills to shove down his throat for a few days. Little fart would spit the pills out until I buried em about 1/2 way inside of a weiner....... That kid came out to practice, Bandit was no where to be seen during his practice, couldn't even call him out of hiding.

Our third child, Bruno, suddenly had a huge lump on the side of his head, that caused the eye to close... Vet determined he musta been stung by something. It took the better part of a week, for his looks to get back to normal. Scary when one of yer 'kids' is hurtin' Black Dog

Just a quick update...Zerbert is on antibiotics and obviously feeling better...tail wags more often etc...
The swelling hasn't gone down much, but the vet said not to worry yet.
I just look at it and know, that's got to hurt.
Y'all that know labs know when they wag the tail, they put their "all" into it. The wag can clear off tables, bruise peoples shins, break windows...and they wag more than most dogs. An awake labdog is a happy labdog. For them, everything, is THE BEST IDEA EVER!
But...the wag...the high-power ones anyway, get the whole body swinging...including the head. Oooo...his poor head.
Believe me...there's nothing quite so pathetic as a labdog who's head throbs when the tail wags...

My daughter's dog, that I'm baby sitting this week and next also has a knot on her head and is doing the "wag wince wag wince". Only she ran into a car door about 80 MPH. She thought they were going off without her and she came around the car and bang, one of the kids had opened the door for her to get in............. Mark said it cooled her out for about 30 seconds, then she got up, crawled very easy into the SUV, went to the back and laid down. That was a 1st in her 8 year old life, that she laid down in a moving vehicle...... She seems OK now, the vet gave me some type of a tranquilzer for evening. Otherwise she kind of snored/growled in her sleep, VERY FIRKIN annoying, and it is against grandpa's rules to kennel her at night, so we got med's.

Charlie, the Springer from hell got wasp stung once when he was about half grown, his ears swelled up, had trouble breathing, eyes swelled shut, vet said shove a couple Ibuprofin down his throat while he could still swallow, he was good as new in 30 minutes. Close call. Hoser

Y'all might recall these two posts about Zerbert...the big black lab... http://lifeisaroad.com/blog/2009/03/08/well-this-cant-be-good/http://lifeisaroad.com/blog/2009/03/09/good-newsmostlysorta/ We had to put Zerbert down this afternoon. He DID have a sinus infection, and the antibiotics cleared it right up (hence why he was feeling better Thursday or so last week). Unfortunately the very large swelling on his head did not go down, and he took a turn for the worse over the weekend. We called the vet and he said it may be an abscess and they'd have to risk surgery (that was a last resort as in the past as his bloodwork and advanced age indicated he may not survive the anthesisia). Anyway, we took him in for that and the mass didn't feel like an abscess to the vet, so they did an ultrasound. It was a tumor, not an abscess, and they were fairly certain there were more in his lungs from listening to his breathing. We suspected this weekend and we knew for sure this afternoon that he couldn't see out of his right eye or hear out of that ear. He was shaking just trying to stand there, but his tail was still wagging and he just wanted to go home. It breaks my heart to have to be the one to decide he could not...it's a role I despise. But, he lived a good life, and was a great dog. Zerbert the big black lab, who never stopped smiling and wagging...and whose motto was always, "BEST! IDEA! EVER!" 1994-2009 (shown here in healthier times)

My Toy Poodle, Scamp, joined Zebert at Rainbow Bridge today .... he was 8 years old.
Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Daniel... I'm sorry to hear of your loss.... it always sucks to have to be the one to make that decision.
Those darned animals get to be a large part of our lives.... I've had all kinds of "pets" over my lifetime.... they are wonderful to share with... the good and the bad... they teach us much, if only we are open and pay attention. Labs are good dogs too, one of the better breeds to have in a family and around children IMHO.
We had one up until several years ago, named Oreo, we rescued from the pound and certain death... she was HUGE! She weighed almost 80 pounds, which is rather large for a female. She contracted heart worms right after we got her (probably had them before...) I surely thought we would lose her during that ordeal.... and the treatment... but she survived, even though she was down to nearly 1/2 of her original weight... So, she became one of our family... a big part... When I built my house she made every step that I made and was always beside me no matter what.... As a matter of fact, her footprints were in my slab very soon after pouring the concrete when I went in to grab a sandwich. I believe she felt worse about it than I did... those dark brown eyes could surely look sad.
My grandson used to pull her tail and her ears and once or twice I even caught him trying to ride her.... he was two... she took it all in stride and never growled or showed a tooth... she did knock him over with her anxious tail a few times... 10 years later she was long in the tooth and gray in the face very similar to Zerbert... She developed tumors as well,,,, one in her leg that pretty much crippled her... then one in her throat... then more... we finally had to make that decision and end it for her... Good Dog! One of my favorites in life....
Poor guy! Bless you! Thanks for sharing!

I fear this day is coming to us too in the near future as Cookie our half Beagle half Cocker is nearing 12yrs old and the years are starting to show on her. Sorry to hear that you lost your friend Daniel. We lost our 13 yr old black lab just last week
Those crazy labs sure grow on you and the family.
Ours had cancer and the lump on her shoulder was half the size of her head. She passed at home and far as we could tell, was not in pain, and like labs everywhere would eat ANYTHING with gusto right up to the end

Sorry to hear about the loss of your buddy. Animals are just as important in our lives as the children we raise. We've been through this too and if its any consolations, you've got your memories of him.

I lost three dogs last year ... Plato was a 17 y.o. Mini Schnauzer; Bobbie was a 4 month old mix; and Quanah was an 8 y.o. Dalmatian. Scamp was an 8 y.o. Toy Poodle. We now have five dogs, down from eight. I can't imagine life without my furry friends.
