I am, and have been having a temp problem with my '99 Tour.  I have an aftermarket temp gauge installed.  I am pulling a doublewide sidecar and quite often pull a Leesurelite trailer.
I am trying to find the temp the fan is to come on.  I have noticed that people are talking of 205 and such but that sounds very high.  I thought it had been coming on around 170 or 180.
I ran the bike today and temp was 205 with no fan so I replaced the fan switch to no avail and then shorted it to the frame and success.  Fan on.
Let the bike cool down to 160 and shorted, fan on.
What is the temp the fan is to come on and turn off?
Thanks,

bill.

as was already posted,
the oem thermostat opens at 176-183 and it is fully open at 203. these #s are from the tech manual.

fan motor switch on at 208F-216F and off at 199F - 207F, from tech manual.

and,
this is an all aluminum engine, aluminum dissipates heat faster than a cast iron engine and cylinder heads. so the temps from the manual are what is needed for proper operation of the engine.

recommend only Rotella 15w40 oil or equivalent be used for best wear protection while pulling those loads. higher ambient temps would suggest mobil1 15w50.

Thanks for the help.  I tried looking thru posts but could not find the info.
I looked in the shop manual and did not find the info.  As usual just ask and you will receive.
The bike is fine and ready for a run to the sidecar rally in Iowa and a bunch of runs around here.
Again Thanks,

bill.

too cold for an aluminum engine and heads. u are losing HP, MPG and increasing engine wear.  Honda engineers have everything right with the cooling system for their flagship engine.
