Patrick,
Ok no more hijacking threads.
What grind did you have on the cams?
Looking for some for mine and not impressed with the few offerings I have seen.
Thanks Steve

Don't know, I may be able to find the info somewhere if I remember where it is or if I still have it.. I can come up with some numbers that are close though.. I sent the shafts to some folks I've dealt with for 40+ years along with some specs that I thought I would like.. They of course performed their own form of magic and returned them with a different spec sheet stating that I always want something too wild from them and that I should be happy with what they did.. As always, I'm glad they did what they did because that engine argued like crazy and would have probably been completely unrideable if they did what I wanted.. Does any of this make sense??

OK, here we go.. I should have looked before typing the first post..
I asked for: .380 lift [ I measured and there isn't much room in this engine]
                 320 duration exh
                 310             int
                 104 CL
I think I got :  .340 lift
                     285 duration
                     108 CL
To answer your original Question.. I think your right.. There really weren't any decent camshafts available then and would be surprised if there were any today.. I believe the factory shafts are around .320 lift, 220-230 duration with a wide CL.. They are pretty anemic..

Its been said that the '97 shafts were different, but, the only thing I can find is that the CA cams are different from the 49 state cams and they have been used for all years.. Maybe the early '97s were different and Honda just won't admit it, I don't know and I've tried to find out.. The only thing different in the '97s that I've found are/is the needles and even that has been argued..
Clay Smith has been around for a long time and its probably worth giving him a call.. I've never used his stuff, but, he has had a good rep for quite a while..

Today part numbers for the camshafts are the same for 1997 and 1998.
So you would get the same camshaft. I do not know if it has always been that way or not.

Thanks guys, gives me something to work to.
I am away working at the moment so do not have access to my records but I do have different spec's for 97 cams and there is definitely different needles. A mate bought a set of 97 carbs from the States and the needles are different and they are genuine Keihin not aftermarket, very slightly thinner (richer) than the later needles. I had tried to run a thread to see if people in other countries knew what needle numbers were in their units, very little feed back. My manual covers some countries  but not all and not the States.
Can post differences when I get back home if you are interested.
Cheers and thanks Steve

I'm interested.. The part numbers would be great and even the measurements would be nice.. This is the first time, if I remember correctly, that some one has agreed that the needles were different ..

I have 2001 stock needles in my rollaway, i will see if i can check the length and and smaller taper diameter and post back, i have found that the needle is very sensitive, i have a single 45 Mikuni and have the richest # 95 you can get, i have tried them all PAINFULL!! W/O a dyno, took over 6 months to dial in the motor, along with fuel pressure adjustments, and hand drilling jets bigger and bigger larger excelerator pump nozzle, and larger slow jet. i have also considered a racing cam, But think the overlap long duration would just bleed boost pressure through the exhaust valve staying open longer, the stock cam works more like a water pump. but unblown motors can use the longer duration Cams.

1997 carb id = 49 VPK0A, CA BPK0B   - different for 1998 and later

Jet needle number = J6KG   -  different for 1998 and later

Pilot Screw for 1997 49 1.75 turns out, CA 2 turns out    -   different for 1998 and later

So the needle is different and the pilot screw setting.
It is unclear if the carb is actually different or if since the needle is different they re numbered the carb.

A search of the service manual does not identify anything else unique to the 1997 model. identofymaa
