Any tunnel where you disappear into the bowels of the earth and can't see out on either side is "the longest tunnel in the world" while you're in it ... The two tunnels I deal with regularly are the Big Walker tunnel and the East River tunnel on 77. Big Walker is in Virginia, and East River is half in Virginia and half in West Virginia. Both are around a mile long. One winter night when I was traveling to Ronceverte with Uncle Dan and Aunt Jean in their great big boat-mobile, we stopped on the Virginia side of the East River tunnel and switched drivers (I started driving)... we came out on the West Virginia side in a driving blizzard... I only knew how to go up 219, but we had no trouble and it was really kind of fun... I went through them on the Valkyrie on the Blue/Gray ride last summer. -Mike "I didn't help build them"

some yahoo always scares the crap outa me when they blow their horn!! I have been through the ones on 77 a year or so ago while staying in Va. Rode up to W. Va. to the big bridge. W. Va. has some of the best views on an interstate highway that you will ever see.

If you ride with the Tennessee boys on the BRP, they beep their air horns and vroom their cobras in every tunnel ... those tunnels aren't long, but some have curves and get real dark, especially when you're stuck inside a full face with sunglasses... -Mike "if you ride with the Tennessee boys get ready to have a good time..."

Beautiful pics! Navigator and I never made it to Alaska, as intended. We can see from your pics that it would have been a great experience. Thanks.

Very cool pics from Ak. I did not realize there was that many pleasure boats there. This is the tunnel at Cumberland Gap Tn. You go down hill once inside the tunnel, kinda strange!! Mike, here's one of those with a curve, kinda dark going in. yeh, pull down the shades

Nice pictures Al. We passed thru the tunnel just after it was opened to highway traffic in 2000. The biggest surprise to us was that there was NOTHING in Whittier if you don't fish or dive.
Has it changed any? We couldn't even get lunch, nothing there to sell lunch.

I lived in AK in the early 80s and did the Valdez/Whittier ferry thing and loaded our car on the train and rode through the tunnel. Prince William Sound is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Thx for sharing!

Raymond, It just so happens, that the day I was there, all the small vendor places were getting ready or had closed down for the winter. A lot of small places like Whittier pretty much rely on tourists between May and September.

If your riding or driving, chances are, you'll go through Palmer. Please give me a heads up before your departure, and I'll put out the welcome matt. .jpg)
