Has anyone tried to transplant an ECM from a 98-00 Goldwing into a Valkyrie to replace the ICM? I am attempting it now. Love the Valkyrie but the fuel consumption is horrid. Comparable Goldwings are getting 35-38 MPG. Best Ive seen on 97 Valkyrie is 30-31. Even a few MPG improvement would be better.

Haven’t heard of it. I doubt it would be easy, even if possible. There are other things also impeding our mpg between the GoldWing. Personally I don't consider a 6-7 mpg difference all that horrid.

I ride a 2000 GW SE and a 2007 ST1300. 35-38 on the GW and 45-47 on the ST. 30-31 on a Valkyrie sucks. Why does the best looking bike ever get the worst mileage.

Compared to my ST1100 his MPG was terrible! Remember you're pouring gas into 6 carbs on the Valk. Have you guys swapped bikes (for a full tank) to see if the MPG stays with the bike or follows the rider?

The ICM is not your issue. I have a ‘97 tourer and consistently get 36 even at 75+ at 3500 RPMs. Remember the 1500 wing has 2 carbs and different cams.

Valkyries seem all over the place to me. I don't think in terms of mpg, but I go on reserve around 115. Wimp's Red and White will go 150 or more. It seems like when we'd stop, I'd always get a gallon more than him. I've heard many different answers for "when do you go on reserve?" over the years...

On my interstate, 35.7 mpg. This weekend, solo, averaging 70 mph. Some stop and go in traffic.

UPDATE: The GW ECM was successfully transplanted into the 97 Valkyrie. Seems to run just fine and better low end. Road testing this week to test mileage.

Was it plug and play?
What did the tech do?
I am interested in hearing the results in both riding and MPG.

I would like to see a picture of the ECM. What is the part number? What model Goldwing did it come off of?

Which model Valk? Std/T or IS? IS would be either a better match to the GW, or worse.
If you want better mileage, get a larger diameter rear tire. I've still to mount my ATT to my IS, but I would expect something like 5% better miles or faster bike.

It was not plug and play. I had to build an adapter harness destroying an old ICM and a GW wiring harness. I believe the ECM and harness are from 98-00 GW if the Ebay supplier is believable. I only used the wires needed to match the Valkyre ICM. I am ignoring the remainder of the GW inputs (IAT, 2nd, 3rd,4th, OD) for now. I will be testing the other inputs after my initial baseline tests are complete. So far it runs fine and has improved low end torque when accelerating away from a stop. I will report back after a couple of tanks of data are gathered. I dont understand your question about the TECH. If you mean TACH It works fine as the GW Tach lead is Yellow/Blue instead of Yellow/Green.

GW ICM provides a vacuum advance for more advance during part throttle cruise, this is where the MPG war is won or lost. https://www.goldwingfacts.com/threads/gl1500-ecm-ignition-timing.320266/

That is precisely why I picked the GW ECM.

Looks like you have the vacuum line hooked up off the ECM?

My mileage jumped from 33 to 38 after installing a 6 degree advance wheel.

Using regular or premium? Mine jumped a good bit by the installation of I/S carb springs, Dynojet needles and an I/S ICM - this on a '99 CA-model Tourer. I've had similar results on other Valkyries. The CA models have different cam profiles than the 49-staters. Perhaps this aids mileage at the loss of a bit of power but I have zero problems passing anything with that bike when running 2-up - even with a full trunk and saddlebags. At 75MPH on the highway I easily and consistently see 40-42MPG. It has a Bat Wing and I/S radiator/pods. And it can run on 87 octane gas.

***update***. The transplant was a measured success. After running on the GW ECM the Valkyrie went from 30 mpg to 34.5 calculated over 1000 miles. When time allows I will be documenting advance curves on the stock ICM, the GWECM using only basic sensors and testing the effect of the unused sensor inputs. Will update later.
