Yep, that happened today and it sucked. First time it ever happened to me and hopefully the last. We were in Boston this morning for graduation ceremonies for my daughter getting her Master of Arts in Education. We went to a restaurant after and parked in an underground garage. Me, my wife, my two daughters and four of her friends got on an elevator with another gentlemen for a two floor up ride to the lobby. Hit the button to go and the elevator groaned and shook like it was struggling to lift the weight of the car and it's occupants. Nobody could believe it was happening. We realized it wasn't going to move, so we hit the emergency call button. We had total of three calls, mostly because a fix didn't seem to be happening quickly enough when your stuck in an elevator for over 40 minutes. Finally repairmen came. They strained to open the door but got it open. The elevator had gone down almost one more floor to the third level instead of going up. We had to carefully jump and/or climb of the elevator down about two feet to get out. Was a very strange and unnerving experience. All were very happy to get out as a few appeared to be getting panicky. Pic taken, before people started to get panicky. https://photos.app.goo.gl/jLj4FrLqkHgYx55L7We took the stairs when we went back to the car to leave the garage.

That doesn't sound like any fun Tony...Yet it's better than a free-fall top to bottom in an elevator..

We (employees) got stuck in the elevators in our old (1940) Federal Bldg in DC many, many times.
The old corded phones in them got picked up and the Otis Elevator people were used to the calls. They came pretty quickly, but having to wait 20-30 minutes was common.
We (USDVA) had the first 8 floors in that building, and it got so using the stairs was the safer bet (down more than up).
The real bitch was if you got stuck on a crowded elevator or if you ended up with some claustrophobic person getting panicky (which can get contagious). "OK look, everyone sit down (on the sticky floor) and calm down and breathe easily, please."
I got so pissed off one time after a long wait, I swung up and kicked the ceiling panel out, crawled up on the elevator roof and was working on getting a set of doors open from the inside, when they got it moving again. I got in some trouble for that one.

Agreed, a free fall would have been worse.

The guys who got us out were also from Otis. We were stuck about 45 minutes. People had starting to get panicky until the guys from Otis called on the intercom and we could then hear them working on opening the door. I don't wish to have that experience again.

Five women and 4 men. One of the men is not in the picture.

I am not claustrophobic, nor do I have a fear of falling BUT I would not want to be trapped with my daughters in a stuck elevator trying to keep them calm and answering all the questions as to why we are stuck here and why can't you ( dad) just fix the elevator.
Well Tony, at least it will make for a great family memory some time down the road.

Yeah, we're already laughing about it. But don't ever want to experience that again.
