I bought a second Valkyrie as a project. I am replacing the rear tire and found a worn out final drive. The splines are about half worn...
I believe this was caused by a lack of grease and the failure to put the teflon shim or spacer back in when the shop re-assembled it the last time in there. It is not there now and the damper plate is worn slightly.
My question, where can I find the spacer? I have looked at the blow of of the parts schematics, but can't seem to find it.
Anyone got the part # ? thanks, Jim

OK, I looked at Partszillas site and found it.
I was about to make one like said above, but prefer to go with the real thing.
Thanks, Jim

Three things.
First, it’s called a thrust washer. It’s #5 on the rear wheel fisch page on HDL or others like Procaliber.
Next. Check real good up inside the flange, sometimes the thrust washer gets glued in there by grease.
Lastly. If there’s wear on the dampener plate that is a sure sign the dampener pads are shot. You probably need a set of those as well. And also check the shoulders of the hub around the right side wheel bearing. I’m talking about the surface that the thrust washer sits on. If the corners are rounded out and the flat surface is ground down so the bearing is setting higher than the metal around it. You need a new wheel.

Tell-tale sign that the teflon washer wasn't put back on. Are the splines okay?

Ron, great pictures. Yes it has the signs as above in the pictures, BUT, not nearly as bad. I would say maybe 25% of the wear shown in the picture above on the damper plate. I think I caught it in time, The tires did not have many miles on them.
The splines in the final drive are starting to get worn to a point, so I am guessing it went dry at some time in the past. I'm lucky that I am a parts hoarder, I have a low mile final drive I got reasonable a few years ago off ebay as a spare.
The splines on the 5 star drive are in very good shape, How can that be? I'm thinking they changed the 5 star drive last time in there, hoping in would be ok for a while.
This bike was serviced by a dealer, just goes to show how their work should be double checked. THANKS for the help, JIM

Any time I buy a bike that was dealer serviced , I bought trouble. I have bought and sold ten bikes. Of the three that were dealer serviced , all three needed rear end work up to a replacement final drive. Dealers do not want to or know how (most) to service the old Valks.

Dealers do not want to or know how (most) to service the old Valks. How long would it take a dealer, even if he didn't polish down in the crevices between the splines on the flange like I do , to do a "proper" tire change on a Valkyrie? Pulling the final, cleaning and lubing each end of the shaft and the flange and the o-rings... putting it back together... $200 - $300 additional charge to change a tire on a Valkyrie? -Mike

A lot depends on the dealership's work climate too (philosophy). If the next technician is cutting corners and pulling more work tickets per day, and making more money per day, are the other technicians gonna keep on doing things by the book? Management might even have a talk with you on not meeting your quota." And, you would meet your quota if you quit using that torque wrench!" So on. True, a lot of technicians don't know what a Valk is.

From what I have seen at some dealerships. The main ($100+/hr) mechanic passes off tire changes to others. The shop still charges but you get someone who while trying their best isn’t up to the task on a Valkyrie.
