The ECT mod has worked very well for me. I used a potentiometer, which allows you to dial in how much (by ear) advance you want. I use mid-grade gas to avoid preignition damage. Using the "pot" you can turn off the advance if you can't get the right gas. I know some don't use anything but regular; I would rather pay a bit extra and avoid problems. I gained 2 to 3 MPG, depends on the exuberance of your right wrist. I found it inexpensive, pretty easy and worthwhile.

Pretty much the same results here.
However after doing mine My wife and I went to the Smokey Mountains for a week of riding. Her on her Harley me on my Valk.
Surprisingly I got the same and usually better mileage than she did. I was able to climb most all mountains in high gear at 30-35 mph following her. She had to downshift.
I averaged 46-48 mpg on those trips. Of coarse we never ran hard and rarely got over 50-60 mph. Mostly 45 and below.
My best mileage was an unbelievable 55 mpg!!!
We leave for San Antonio for another week of riding on Saturday the 6th so I hope to repeat those #'s.
Before the mod I never got better than 40mpg while babying it.

After my 1st long trip, 25 mpg at touring speeds, I put on the 6 deg trigger wheel, went up to 33-35 mpg, but the performance gets soft at high rpm. I removed the trigger wheel and installed the ECT mod and was very happy around town and on short trip riding. Then I went to Sturgis and quickly remembered why I had put on the trigger wheel, was back to 25 mpg during the highest gas prices. After returning home I removed the ECT mod and reinstalled the trigger wheel, won't look back.

Like it better then the trigger wheel. I did not use a pot. Usually use 87 octane. Never had a problem in 3 yrs and 30,000 miles. I still only get 32 mpg which was down from 35ish. I like the feel better then mpg.

I did the simple ECT mod (no pot), changed to I/S carb springs and polished the intakes. I've gotten better than 50 MPG, better overall performance, and the total cost was so very minimal that it seems virtually impractical not to make those modifications.

9 Ball I am glad you asked this because I had questions on the ect mod also.
Am I reading correctly that it does not improve mileage at highway speeds?? What benefit will the pot give me?

Did my IS several years back. Have put on say 40K since. Hardly ever turn it off. Made one trip to Canada and found only regular gas at a remote town. Turned it off until the next tank. Most always use midgrade fuel. Last year starrted to pull a tent trailer and sometimes turn it off pulling the trailer up a mountain.
I used a three switch front brake fluid cover switch set. Drilled three holes in a after market smooth cover and installed three LED's in the holes. One yellow (for half advance) One red (for full advance) One blue (for running lights). The proper ballast resistors to control the current through the led's. Mounted three 30 amp relays Just in front of the air box on the frame strut. Rather than the "pot" I used two resistors. Can't remember the values, picked them by watching a timing light and a "pot" so I could move the firing point with the "pot" Picked one for full advance, mid advance and no advance. Wired up the whole thing. Now all I have to do is flip a switch to pick "factory setting" (no LED's lit) Half advance (yellow LED lit) and full advance (red LED lit). It repeats the setting at will just by fliping a switch and a glance at the three LED's mounted on the cover.
