Rita has a small computer with Windows 7 installed, an Acer monitor, keyboard, and an old HP printer. When she moved out of her house prior to its sale, I was told none of it worked so hadn't been used for years. Well, guess what...it all works great. The computer is a bit slower than my current unit but still works great, has a 468gb hard drive with about 405 available. I fired up the puter and downloaded all of Nancy's stuff on a flash drive(had to prove it was all on there) then deleted it from the hard drive(again, had to prove it was gone). Sheesh! She told me the printer was kaput, hadn't worked for years. Knowing my Nancy, I ordered new toner, plugged the printer in with new toner and it worked great. It's an older unit, an HP C4480, it prints, scans, & copies just fine. Lastly, the monitor is an Acer, believe it's about 22" measured diagonally and also works fine. At one point I was on the internet which worked fine using Google Chrome. I'm not sure of the brand of the computer, it's small...about 4" high, about 13.5" long and 10.5" wide, but has no brand tag anywhere. I have no use for it, have a good operating desktop and have a near new unit stored. I'm thinking I'll just put this on Face Book Market Place as a complete set up but don't really know what to ask. Thought maybe ask $250 and if someone waves $200 in my face let it go.

Now if someone on here wants it, let me know and I'll pack it up for shipping. Or, if you're coming to InZane this year let me know and I'll just bring it with me. As for price...I'm VERY flexible.  Wink

200 for all is IMO a decent deal for someone who needs a printer and monitor and computer/keyboard.  250 is pushing it IMO.   Even if you get 150 not a bad deal on both ends.

The printer appears to be an ink jet, if that's the case $200 is rather optimistic. If I'm misreading it and the printer is a laser then $200 is more in line, moving into a good deal category.

Running Windows 7 means it's a very old computer, no longer supported. Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 7, including critical security fixes, January 14th 2020. Meaning all the exploits discovered since then are still in there.

One side issue - Unless you used a hard wipe program when removing her personal data, it's rather trivial for a skilled person to recover it in the state the computer is currently in.  And depending on HOW personal her personal data is, it might be worth more than $200 to not sell the computer.

What I generally do in these situations is physically remove the hard drive and destroy it (The magnets in there are fun to play with, hard drives also make fun targets at the range) and then donate the carcass to Good Will for the tax write-off.

Most folks don't wanna buy a computer without a hard drive that can't boot an OS or run any programs, and sadly a portion of the folks who DO want to buy such a computer are buying it for nefarious purposes.

Sorry, not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but you did ask...

What Serk said about the hard drive data above is important.   Just because you deleted it, does not mean the computer "erased" the file, just noted (internally) that part of the storage area was again available for use.

And yes, the OS is old.  Having said that, I do still use Windows 7 from my route planning software (Microsoft Streets and Trips).  But I run it under a program called VM Ware on my MacBook.

Re. Nancy's personal info...there was nothing of that nature in there. It was all her artsy stuff(professional artist) with her signature. In fact, when we got married recently I suggested she keep her name, Nancy DeMille, since that's how she has signed everything since a young woman. Recently she was approached about illustrating for the author of a new book. Would be a nice feather in her hat I suppose.

As for price, I never figured I'd get $250, if I got half that I'd be happy. Just want it gone and hate the thought of tossing a good working computer/printer combo. Granted, they're older models but even I still work and I'm somewhat of an "older model" and hope I don't get tossed.  Wink I'll list it on Face Book, maybe some kid can use it.

Donate to a school in a low income area.  You won't have any more money in your pocket, but you'll get some warm fuzzies.

I don't want to berate the point, so after this I'll shut up unless explicitly asked to comment:

Not just her data on the computer. Modern browsers also cache credentials. So if she ever used that computer to log onto her cloud e-mail (GMail, Yahoo, etc), used it to log onto her bank, Amazon, anything really, someone could use those cached credentials in bad ways.....

Sell - but I'd take the current HD out and put in a new ~500 GB, and tell the buyer they need to get their own copy of Win10 or Linux (Ubuntu isn't hard to install, and should work well on that computer). Win11 probably will not install on that, since it is so old.

I'm guessing Nancy might want to keep her old artwork, and getting a USB harddrive enclosure is the safest thing to do here.

And maybe a small tax write off...I had thought of your suggestion. We do have some contacts in the school system so might take that approach...after our InZane travels.

If I sell(or keep) it I'll probably do what you've suggested. Will probably look at the memory as well, see if it needs upgrading to a larger capacity.
