As oppsed to other years are there any issues someone needs to be aware of on a 97 model valk? A friend is looking at one. I thought I have heard some thing discussed here in the past.

Thanks

Other than other Valk owners, that don't have '97's, being envious...  Cheesy

Like Daniel posted, check the usual (drive splines, vacuum hoses...).

I have two 97's.  The 97's are faster but due to different carbs don't get quite the gas mileage of the later years.  I am happy with both and when I want gas mileage I take my BMW R1200C that gets 50 mpg but needs 91 octane.  The valks run nicely on 87.

I think '97s have smaller front wheel bearings. Also based on my observations, they have more HP along with the predictable higher fuel consumption. Kim & I will take the EXACT same ride & upon fill-ups her '98 Valk will take 1/2 to 3/4 gallon less fuel than my '97.  ??? Conversely my '97 will flat out run away from the '98.
1997's really have no issues other than they are at least 1 year older than any other Valk.  Grin uglystupid2
You've heard the old real estate adage, location, location, location is most important. With buying a Valkyrie it's condition, condition, condition... that is paramount. Shoot, ALL Valkyries are old now!  2funny

Pushing 100K miles on my '97. Just over 21K on Kim's Valk. Both run like new!  cooldude

i also have a 97 tourer, and i have issues, alot of issues, more issues than i have space to write.
1) up here in new hampshire we have very few straight roads so long distance speed cant be obtained.
2) there are very few other valk riders up here
3)the dealer cowers when my bike shows up on the lot (they have they cutest little techs that fear the size of the "ole" girl)
4)i get pulled over for bogus reasons just so the cops can look her over(not somuch now as before, but they always hire rookies)
5)the nickle wont fall over
6)a few of the neihbors have blamed me for loud exhaust when its really the betterhalfs bike that is louder (she has a suzuki voluisa 800)
7) but as for the 97 valk? it runs great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just like a dog that has had turpintine sprayed on its ass  2funny

J V -

That is one beautiful bike!!

I bought an almost identical one off Ebay a couple months.  While waiting to pick it up, I kept going back to the Ebay page to drool over the pictures.  Apparently, I have been living in the South too long because all I could think was, "Sure is purty."

Enjoy it!

Cheers,
Ben

Oh, BTW.  When I was at the Barber Musuem (http://www.barbermuseum.org/), they had that same model/color on display.  Don't know if it's still there, but MAN, anyone near Alabama has got to check out the Barber Motorsports Musuem.  Best motorcycle musuem I have ever seen in life.  I could spend all day there drooling.... and not just at the Valk.

OK, probably not a tech post anymore, but I had to put in the plug.  Barbers rocks.

Cheers,
Ben

Yes, holding on tightly enough as it accelerates is an issue. Especially if it's a first year Bumblebee like mine. (But since you might be new to the Valkyrie, the first year is fastest is actually a good natured myth that we owners of the 1997 continue to spread.)

Your face will hurt from that perpetual grin that will be planted on your face.......and your ass will hurt from riding it too much 'cause once you're on it, you won't want to get off.   Grin

Ah yes, don't forget the constant "Nice bike!" comments from just about anyone that walks by, and the slow head turns that you'll catch out of the corner of your eye when you roll past somone in town.  You WILL get attention!
