Edit
The NASA X-43 was an experimental unmanned hypersonic aircraft with multiple planned scale variations meant to test various aspects of hypersonic flight. It was part of the X-plane series and specifically of NASA's Hyper-X program. It set several airspeed records for jet aircraft. The X-43 is the fastest jet-powered aircraft on record at approximately Mach 9.6.[1]L

I may have gotten confused between the actual and fictional craft but it appeared the X-43, if it had the range, could fly from Los Angeles to New York City in about a half hour.  I guess it was unmanned because a human body couldn't deal with that speed in the atmosphere?

From the internet.....

4,520 mph
The Fastest Fighter Jet Ever
It reached record top speed of Mach 6.72 or 4,520 mph, which is more than five times the speed of sound. The X-125 was an experimental hypersonic rocket-powered aircraft developed in the 1960's and still holds the record for the highest speed ever recorded by a crewed, powered aircraft.

I was surprised that they didn't mention the 747.  It's about as fast as you can go in a commercial jet other than the Concorde.  It'll do mach .86.  I was always amazed that as big as it is, it can go faster than most other commercial passenger jets.
