A little background, I got my Valkyrie in '08 with 34K on the clock, she now has 140K.  I have replaced the front tire every 10-11k miles.  So have removed the front rotors a lot of times.  When I got the Valk, the previous owners had install covers for the rotors, with a spacer between the covers and rotors.

I was out for a short ride several days ago, when I started hearing and feeling a clunk coming from end.  Because of where I was on "farm to market" county roads, I had to got several miles to where I could pull off to check out the problem.  When I stopped, I found that I had lost one of the bolts/spacers on the left rotor.  I was able to tighten the remaining bolts a bit and limp home.  Hard not to use front brakes.

Moral of the story is that one should check these bolts ever so often.  BUT in my defense if that I have never had these bolts come loose in over 100k miles. Now i am waiting for spaces to arrive.  NO riding.  tickedoff

rotor bolts need to be installed with high temp medium strength thread lock.  The honda product is red whereas common loctite red is not hi-temp and not medium strength, so don't use that.

Hondalock 2HT – Red-colored threadlock for medium-torque fasteners in high-temperature applications.

My question is, why are you removing rotors to change tires?  I’ve worn out my share of tires in 180K miles as well and never ever removed a rotor unless I was replacing the rotor.

I hash mark those bolts. They're TTY bolts (torque to yield) meant for single use so I didn't want to break them when re-using. Also, if the hash marks line up you probably didn't skip torquing a given bolt.

that is incorrect, the bolts are not TTY bolts.

nope.  manual calls for replacement with new aka lawyers safety rules and corp make money on parts.

new bolts have dry thread locker on them, so just use correct new honda high temp thread locker as I posted and re-use the bolts as most have done over the yrs.

I hash mark those bolts.

I bought a slightly used high quality AR from a policeman a couple years ago, which had been set up by the PD armorer.  Every nut and widget on that rifle was hash marked.  At first I thought someone had got sloppy with some paint (tiny little sharpy marks), but closer study revealed the logic behind the work.

I've done a few small scratches on my motorcycles.  They do come in handy.

Thanks for the comments, BUT think I was not clear in what I was calling the rotors.  I was talking about the whole unit holding the brake pistons, brake calipers, not the rotor portion located on the wheel.  MY BAD.  I had a brain fart and used the wrong terminology.

I have only removed one of the actual rotors when, with help, replaced the tire using hand tools.

Those would be the calipers.
